AMD Say R9 290X Will Ridicule Titan
Written by Katie Allen on 07 October 2013 at 15:00

AMD product manager David Nekechuck has claimed that the company's new flagship GPU will “ridicule” the GeForce GTX Titan.

He stated that, performance wise, the R9 290X will more than compete with rivals Nvidia.

AMD Say R9 290X Will Ridicule Titan

The product manager insisted that the high-end GPU “will definitely compete with the GTX 780 and Titan” even though the R9 290X's 438 square mm die is significantly smaller than the Titan’s 550 sq. mm GK110 offering.

Qualifying his statement in gaming terms, Nekechuck claimed it meant that “with Battlefield 4 running with Mantle (AMD’s new graphics API), the card will be able to ridicule the Titan in terms of performance” and that it will be able to run the game “much faster” than Nvidia's best single GPU offering when using AMD's Mantle API, set to launch in December.

The claim is interesting in light of rumours we reported earlier surrounding the pricing on the AMD card. Although the card won't come cheap (suggestions point to around the $730/£550 mark), that would still make it around 30% cheaper on average than Nvidia's offering. Furthermore, Nekechuck confirmed that AMD does not plan to release single-GPU cards in the same $1000 range as the Titan, as it thinks the market at that level is “too niche”.

Could AMD really offer superior performance for significantly less cash, or is this latest reveal nothing but hot air?

I'm glad to see that AMD is trying to make a Titan rival, but i think they are relying on Battlefield 4 way to much (Its one of the best FPS's I've ever played but its not the only game i'm going to play.) Most of the articles on their new line of cards has mentioned BF4 in one way or another

True, but they have largely been basing how good the GPU is off BF4 and how it compares to the Titan, playing that game. With the nearing release though they're not mentioning it as much

it would be no surprise to see an AMD card do better in an AMD optimized game i would like to see it perform vs a max clocked titan in a more neutral setting

we know that titans overclock fairly well and I think it is safe to say that an overclocked titan will beat an R9 290X at stock clocks. if the R9 290X overclocks as well as the 7970 (not GHZ) then an overclocked 290X will most likely beat an overclocked Titan.
that being said, we have no benchmarks for the 290X yet nor do we have any idea of how well it overclocks so we will have to wait and see.

everyone loves BF4 (or at least a lot of people) so they're using it as a good marketing strategy, TBH it's working a lot.

They probably don't. They released GTX 700 very recently. Sure, they'll scramble to respond if the 290X actually does beat the Titan, and hammer out a better gpu, EVENTUALLY. These things take time though. Designing a brand new super awesome GPU that will slaughter everything and doing it in a few months would be rather difficult.

Yeah. One way or another, it'll be good to have some competition at the top end of GPUs, until now Nvidia has just been destroying with the Titan. Competition is good for consumers, no matter how you look at it.

I find it funny how everybody is comparing a BRAND NEW best graphics card by AMD to a 8-month-old graphics card by nVidia. Why is the main aim of a new graphics card to be as good/slightly better than an old card?
We could as well say that GTX 800 series will destroy any AMD card when it comes out?

It's just because the Titan has been so completely uncontested by AMD single GPUs until now. AMD has been competing in the GPU space purely from a price performance standpoint, which is what they've always been good at anyway. The fact that they might actually have some cutting edge tech up their sleeve that could really allow for some competition at the high and top end is, a pretty big deal. As I said above, competition is a good thing for us, we WANT Nvidia and AMD to be scrambling to innovate and get the fastest, best priced GPU out there first.

@Terminaato, man you wrote what i have in my head since this whole R9-290x thing started. Titan is 8 months old, R9 is new and can make use of tech not available 8 months ago(thats like 2 years in the hardware scale). Nvidia always releases their cards earlier than AMD, so AMD can take some time to make their cards a little bit more competitive after Nvidia has shown all their cards.

Nvidia can easily beat the crap out of AMD's cards, If they wanted to. The problem is, if you make a card that's very good compared to the competition, it will be so expensive that noone will buy it (just like the titan) and that there will be very little profit to be made, so marketing-wise it just doesn't make sense. If both companies would go all-out all the time we would've been at GTX 900 levels last year…

if both companies had unlimited budgets for GPU's then we would end up with 2 cards that had almost identical performance and cost because they would both run up against the same thermal and die size limits.
Nvidia could not just decide to "beat the crap out of AMD's cards" and neither could AMD decide to do that to nvidia. they are both producing the best cards that they can within reasonable budgets and time constraints. both companies use TSMC to make their chips so the production cost and yealds for both companies is pretty much the same at a given die size.

OK so the R9-290X will beat the Titan in Mantle supporting games like how Nvidia GPUs would ridicule AMD GPUs in PhysX games… But what I want to know Mr. Nekechuk is how they compete in a game that is Nvidia/AMD neutral like say Crysis 2 or Bioshock Infinite or pretty much every game out there other than the handful that have PhysX and the handful that will have Mantle…?

the 690 may perform better in some cases but it has the issue of being a dual graphics card. it is also only a little bit ahead, not far ahead and the increase in performance is not noticeable in most cases. the 7990 is available $640 right now and a week ago it was $500. it is also more powerful than the titan and 290X and almost on par with the 690.

The 7990 is still €499 here, that's prectically giving it away, and still quite a bit cheaper than either the titan or 690, while just being marginally slower I guess.

Why would you buy a Titan over A 690? Yep, for the exact same reasons.

0
mydreamrigmaza90210

690 is dual GPU, consumes more power, is a bit more hassle, also if the titan is a little behind the 690, and the 290x is a bit further than the titan, the r9 is either on par with the 690, or it can be overclocked PAST gtx 690 levels, and then you could crossfire those for UNMATCHED performance.

I have seen cards with 3 8-pin connectors. I think some of the early versions (pre-reference) of the 7990 had that.
I think a dual titan card would need to be a 4 slot card just to pack enough cooling.

dual titan would most likely need around 400-450 watts which is the limit of 3 8-pin connectors (3x 150W)

the GTX titan is a really power efficient card, I don't doubt the next titan will probably have less TDP. the early 7990 (asus ares 2, devil 13) required 3 8pin because it was 2x7970 just slapped on a sexy cooler. The titan is also a cooler card than the 7970, so Dual GTX titan could fit on a dual slot cooler, but it could be triple slot.

a single titan has a 250w TDP, a dual card design I would expect to be around 400W. I believe that Gigabyte claims that their Windforce X3 cooler is good for 450W so a design like that or like the 7990 reference should work. I don't think that the cooler from the 690 would work as that card only has a 300W tdp.

Mantle(for PC) is looking more and more like TressFX, a one time flip off to Nvidia on a big AAA(for TressFX it was Tomb Raider 2013) game title

I don't think so. it is the API for the next gen consoles so we will see a lot more of it once ports from next gen consoles start.

The way the guy above says it, is like only the R9-290x will use it fully to "ridicule" the Titan
IDK Im just guessing

a graphics card only has so much potential performance and optimization only lets you get closer to that potential. mantle is just an API that lets the developer optimize much better.
the R9 290X is not the only card that can use mantle.

Of course I know that, but it seems AMD only want to advertise Mantle for the R9-290x and as the tech that will help destroy the Titan
Lets just wait and see shall we

AMD should stop with their: Look at our badass new video card, Titan is dead now, blah blah. Atleast realease some proof or anything that it will.

I have no objection against AMD, they are just promoting their new series best pieces, same as nVidia did few months ago.
I don't know many people who would buy GTX Titan or even need card with such performance anyway…

despite the die size is almost hlf compared to GTX780, slight overclock can outperform GTX780 which costs 45% more !! :Đ
