Slender man, a word that sends a chill down the spine of the ones that know of him. And for those of you who have not heard of The Slender man, he is known to be a paranormal being who has been stalking mankind since the beginning of time.
People have reported him of being a tall figure in a black suit, white shirt and tie with no facial features such as eyes, nose, ears, mouth, hair or any clear facial feature as such. Slender Man was first mentioned in Something Awful Forum's "Create Paranormal Images".
Anyway, Slender:The Eight Pages is a free download indie-developed first-person survival horror game released in June 2012 as a beta for Windows and OS X, utilising the Unity engine.
You play as a character in a forest at night, who is out to collect 8 pages containing information about The Slender man. Simple, right?
This is where the game truly shines even after the remarkable simplicity of the game. The visuals of the game is not hard on the eyes, the textures on the world objects are good which make it more believable. The atmosphere of the game is absolutely brilliant along with the sound design. Beautiful night in the quite forest, and it all changes after you collect the first page. There is a constant thundering of the Slender man's footsteps, which always keeps you on the edge of your seat, making you think when he will appear and from where. As you collect more pages, it makes the slender man more restless and he gains on you on every step, the forest starts to fill up with dense fog which obscures your vision making it all the more nerve-racking to play, especially alone at night.
In the end, the gameplay is a bit limited and not much to look forward to after you beat the game but still Slender:The Eight Pages is an absolutely brilliant horror game for its simplicity. Indie-Developers Parsec Productions has really shown that one does not need a huge story and intense gore/violence to spark fear into people. This game is a really good time-killer and to scare the pants of your friends. By the time your done playing, your heart will be pumping and you will be looking over your shoulder every five minutes just to make sure Slender isn't standing behind you.
