New Super Mario Bros. U
A return to form for the portly plumber. Against rising criticism for the constant re-use of the New Super Mario Bros series, NSMBU surprised everyone by becoming one of the most inventively designed Mario games in years. Packing in a great new power-up in the wingsuit, coupled with wildly creative level designed, this gained plaudits as one of the best 2D Mario games in decades.

Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time
Thieves In Time - Compelling story hasn’t always been the forte of the platformer, but this Sanzura offering provides solid and often very funny writing alongside fluid and varied gameplay. Reviving the cel-shaded style that was a staple of the original Sly Cooper trilogy, the visual are great, and the versatility allowed by the time travel mechanic ensures that the gameplay remains fresh throughout.

Puppeteer
Constantly losing and replacing your own head sounds like a bizarre central mechanic for a game, but in Sony Computer Entertainment’s Puppeteer it is just one in a myriad of quirky and original concepts. The entire game takes place on beautifully created wooden stages inhabited by various mechanical and puppetlike characters and props. Innovative, strange, this unashamedly Japanese offering is a magical addition to the genre.
