Game of The Year

Only the best of the best are nominated for the prestigious Game or The Year title, and there can be only one. We are all looking for that one supreme game that brought us to our knees over the past 12 months. Maybe it was the most beautiful experience ever, or perhaps its story was so imaginative that you couldn’t help but be whisked away to its pixelated shores. Nominees are usually highly competent in every facet that makes a title brilliant and all of them are video game titans that stand above the rest. These titles reach the lofty heights where the ‘Half-Lifes’ and the ‘Elder Scrolls’ of gaming history dwell. They push the industry forward, innovating with rich new features and exceptional gameplay, all the while perfecting mechanics that will set the template for every other title to aspire to.

Grand Theft Auto V
Waiting for five years of development seems like forever when you know that at the end you’ll be able to play something as special as Grand Theft Auto 5. Almost inevitably this exceptional title is a masterpiece of gaming. Through development budget and then the goliath sales, GTA V is almost single handedly responsible for moving the entire gaming industry into the same respectable light that Hollywood has enjoyed for decades before it. Investors will not shy away from multimillion pound game development price tags now that they know the world loves to game. GTA V can create this level of impact because it’s a brilliantly written game that puts the player in charge of a Hollywood humbling piece of interactive entertainment.
The Last of Us
Intense, fraught, sombre, terrifying; The Last Of Us is indeed all of these things, but it’s also a staggeringly wonderful example of character development, of narrative density unheard of in traditional gaming. The Last Of Us stands as testament to what can be achieved when you take the exact opposite route of a GTA or an Assassin’s Creed, funnelling you down a linear path at a breakneck pace, borrowing every trick from Hollywood’s big book of directing, ensuring it’s an experience you can’t wait to see through to the end.

Battlefield 4
Coming just two years after Battlefield 3, this may not the be cataclysmic shift we’ve come to know and love from the Battlefield series, but it certainly handles the large scale vehicle-oriented multiplayer like no other. Honing and refining the gameplay from the last outing, this is an immensely enjoyable and beautiful looking game that comes packed with so many variables and things to do that it could easily occupy your free time for years to come, a truly mammoth title that everyone needs to get their hands on.

Bioshock Infinite
Quite possibly the perfect Bioshock swan song. Infinite took us up from the depths of the ocean, where the series began and delivered us into the skies where we could explore a city amongst the clouds. Creating a believable world among the clouds is something only dreams are normally capable of. Bioshock Infinite is a perfect balance of story, art-deco-steampunk and exquisitely well paced action. It easily holds its own against anything else that could be considered the greatest game of the year.

Far Cry 3
It’s one thing to stun us with graphics and deliver an atmospheric open-world. It’s a step above to deliver immense playability and sophisticated AI. But the introduction of a tightly-written and dark storyline that stays with you long after playing, while creating new mantras and quotes recognisable by gamers no doubt for years to come, elevates Far Cry 3 to greatness, this is truly a complete package.

Dishonored
Every bit the spiritual successor to the Thief’s of old, Dishonored is a breathtaking look at a cruel dystopia, where violence and greed hold sway over the hearts and minds of the masses. Few games come along with such a focused consistency of vision, this is a title that doesn’t want to hold your hand and treat you like an imbecile, trusting the player to figure things out for themselves. Dunwall is a violent yet entrancing vision that keeps you coming back time and time again.
