Game of The Year
The Last of Us
Intense, fraught, sombre, terrifying; The Last Of Us is indeed all of these things, but it’s also a staggeringly wonderful example of character development, of narrative density unheard of in traditional gaming. The Last Of Us stands as testament to what can be achieved when you take the exact opposite route of a GTA or an Assassin’s Creed, funnelling you down a linear path at a breakneck pace, borrowing every trick from Hollywood’s big book of directing, ensuring it’s an experience you can’t wait to see through to the end.

Most Beautiful
The Last of Us
Released near the end of the Playstation 3’s life-cycle, this could well be Naughty Dogs’ swansong on Sony’s console, but what a way to bow out. Following on from its success with the beautiful Uncharted series, The Last Of Us is an apocalyptic tale of companionship set in some truly stunning locales. The vision of a ruined future where nature has claimed back the land from man, this is a gloriously good-looking game that will have your PS3 working up a head of steam. Who knew that a ravaged landscape could look so good? Certainly not one for the squeamish, this savage look at apocalyptic survival was nevertheless still an eye-pleaser.

Most Atmospheric
The Last of Us
Atmosphere is essential in survival horror, and the magnificent The Last Of Us has it by the bucketload. The fast pace of the game means it manages to maintain its air of darkness and suspense even when relatively little is happening. Beautiful to look at, the attention to detail in the environment, the terrifying sound of the “clicker” echo location, the cinematic quality of both the visuals and the voice acting all contribute to what is, perhaps, a landmark title in its genre.

The Last of Us
Gruesome, tiring, melancholy; this game is truly an ordeal for the player, but an ordeal surely worth getting through. Combining some of the greatest cinematic devices we have ever seen in gaming with a top-notch script and voice-acting that is almost unheard of in gaming’s hammily-delivered world, this is the place to be for interactive storytelling.
