Best Strategy

Click. Click. BOOM. Strategy games are the bedrock of PC gaming, capitalising on the addictive nature of amassing huge armies and wealth, or constructing a sprawling metropolis from the comfort of your own chair. Strategy games run the full gamut from fast combat-focused competitive titles through to the ponderous thinking-man’s city-builders, with everything in-between.

This genre of gaming is hard to branch out from and rarely do we see titles brave enough to reshape this incredibly popular arena. Refining what works and expanding on something we have played before, only gets a game so far, but nominees for the Best Strategy Award offer you something more. A lot more! Building complete worlds or letting the gamer build or take over complete worlds is all par for the course with these titles and they will sometimes keep you entertained for literally hundreds hours.

Stronghold Crusader 2
The beloved castle simulator is back with a second installment this year. Long-time fans will love the new visuals, a new battle interface, and engine enhancements including effects, animations, and real-time physics. Stronghold Crusader 2 tweaks and enhances everything we loved about the original games and delivers a punishing strategy experience rich in tactical siege warfare.

Age of Wonders 3
Age of Wonders III is a fantasy strategy game that borrows heavily from genre classics but knows what it wants to do, and does it very well. It’s all simple to learn, beautifully presented, and with enough detail and variety to keep fantasy buffs engaged for a long time. Age of Wonders feels like it’s back to stay, in all its beardy, D20-throwing glory.

Wargame: Red Dragon
There are some really fun RTS games out there, but none tries quite as hard to be a proper simulation of conventional operational warfare as the Wargame series. In the latest helping of Soviet-era combat hijinx, takes us away from eastern Europe to the fields, highways, forests and scattered towns of east Asia, while still offering the engagement and breadth we’d expect from this in-depth strategy franchise.
