Sometimes a shooter comes down to a very simple concept - does the shooting feel good? The answer for Overwatch is a resounding, irrefutable “yes, oh sweet baby yes”. Whether you’re crowning nubs with the Widowmaker’s sniper rifle or blasting fools with Reaper’s shotguns, Blizzard have found innumerable ways for players to slay their foes. The joy is that no one particular weapon type makes the others feel irrelevant. GG EZ.
Another title it feels impossible to not include on this list, Overwatch really showed us this year what Team Fortress 2 could be with just the right tweaks and boy did Blizzard hit the mark. With fast paced, intelligent team-driven gameplay in almost every match you play, Overwatch has been hard to put down this year.
So we can all agree that Team Fortress 2 is a great game, but it wasn’t until Blizzard dropped the mic with Overwatch this year that we realised what parts of TF2 were holding it back. Bringing the best parts of a MOBA to the ludicrously fun game mechanics set up by TF2 allowed genuine teamwork to unfold. Overwatch is one of the best IPs that Blizzard has brought to the table for a long time and we’re sure it’ll be here to stay.
If anyone is capable of taking the template laid down by Team Fortress 2 and improving on it in almost every conceivable way, it’s Blizzard. Well known for the high standard of quality in its games, Overwatch is no exception. The characters feel unique enough to be memorable but familiar enough to be understandable, while the maps are interesting and intuitive.
