A thought provoking and ingenious strategy game set in a thought provoking and ingenious world, how could this title not make this list? In typical XCOM form, XCOM 2 had us facing impossible odds while leading a small team against an alien occupied force. Heaps of fun with genuine hopelessness likely to drop down onto you at any time, XCOM continues the already amazing XCOM sci fi saga.
Following on from XCOM, XCOM 2 has given a new twist as to what strategy games can be like. No amassing troops, no grand wars, just tactical, deeply engaging turn based guerilla warfare. One of the best games this year, XCOM 2 will always have a place in the strategy greats.
A triumphant sequel, XCOM 2 has been a massive critical success this year. A squad based turn-based tactical game, XCOM 2 puts the player in front of the merry prospect of complete human annihilation from the not so cheery Advent, an alien invasion force staying well past their welcome. With the countdown to human demise breathing down your neck, you are tasked with leading a much more guerilla approach to stopping these pesky Advent with greater customisation and back story for your squad. A cracking strategy game and very easy to get engrossed in, XCOM 2 definitely deserves its place in our game of the year list.
