Best Indie
With the Best Indie award, we celebrate some of the most creative and forward-thinking talent around, embracing new mechanics while revitalising the old. These are games developed with a fraction of the budget of the AAA monsters but are no less enjoyable for it. The indie devs behind them craft personable, unique games that showcase some of the greatest underground talent in the world today. Indie devs often work their magic under considerable pressure, sometimes holding down full-time jobs while ploughing any of their precious time into their own projects. The best of those projects are given pride of place in our Best Indie Award category.

Night in the Woods
Not just any old adventure game, Night in the Woods is a poignant tale of being a young adult and coming to terms with a changing world. Infinite Fall expertly weaves between giggling comedy and engrossing emotional issues that can feel hugely refreshing.

Nex Machina
Channeling the spirit of Robotron and Smash TV, Nex Machina is a game that just screams Housemarque. They’re truly the undisputed champions of the twin-stick shooter and Nex Machina doesn’t support. Frantically paced and sublimely balanced, Nex Machina is a fine way for this champion of a studio to make their presence felt on PC for the first time.

Rime
The second game from Tequila Works to crop up in this list after The Sexy Brutale, Rime is a gorgeous environmental adventure game with light puzzle solving, much in the same vein as the Team Ico’s titles. The pastoral art style is just the icing on a hugely inviting cake.

The Sexy Brutale
The indie scene is an incredible breathing ground for fresh ideas, and The Sexy Brutale really is a shining example of this. Like all the best ideas, it’s delightfully simple - a murder mystery at a masked ball that runs like clockwork. The day’s events can be rewound and restarted again and again, with the aim being to prevent a series of murders through your prior knowledge gained.
