Game of the Year 2017
Horizon: Zero Dawn
Guerilla Games’ graphics chops have never been in doubt, yet Horizon: Zero Dawn is so much more than its luscious visuals and impeccable animations. It is a pure distillation of so many open-world tropes that have become somewhat rote by now, and yet somehow it all just works. Horizon: Zero Dawn doesn’t feel like it’s wasting your time, it isn’t overburdened with pointless side quests and collectables. It’s an open-world game with a driving purpose, a thrusting narrative that pushes the player through its post-apocalyptic landscape of robotic dinosaurs and warring factions.

Best Open World
Horizon: Zero Dawn
Systemically, Horizon: Zero Dawn’s open-world isn’t an overly complex one. This is no Breath of the Wild, where constant ideas are bashing against one another in rough and tumble instead. Instead, Horizon: Zero Dawn targets environmental perfection. It boasts unbelievable visual detail and jaw-dropping weather effects, topped off by the giant mechanical beasts stomping across it. It’s one of those worlds you can just can’t help but gawp at, a gaming safari that begs to be snapped.

Best Story
Horizon: Zero Dawn
Guerilla Games has often struggled with effective storytelling, but getting New Vegas’ John Gonzalez in for the lead writing gig clearly helped a great deal in Horizon: Zero Dawn. Aloy is electric as the lead, struggling in a far-future society in which robotic creatures rule the wilderness.

Horizon: Zero Dawn
If there’s any Sony studio that can one-up Naughty Dog its Guerilla Games, long known for being a graphical powerhouse. With Horizon: Zero Dawn they finally pair their pixel-pushing talent with an astounding, vibrant art style, lush environments and the most impressive animations we’ve ever seen.
