Game of the Year 2017
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
We’re not ones to dwell on the inner workings of Metacritic scores for too long, but when a game comes along that’s the joint 5th highest scoring game of all time, you sit up and take notice. After years of turgid console launch lineups from all the big players, Nintendo rocks up and shows everyone how it’s done with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. A revelatory change for the series, Breath of the Wild is also a staggering achievement in open worlds, systemic gameplay and joy of just messing about.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
It’s all too easy to run out of superlatives when it comes to discussing The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, but when it comes to the audio it’s in a world of its own. Not just in terms of the music, which has long been a strong point of the Zelda series, but in its restrained usage and the little flourishes that feel like they shouldn’t be possible to orchestrate in such a grand open world. The uplifting notes as you round a corner and spy a fort in the distance, or the familiar dun-dun-duhn-duuuuuuuhn of chest opening replaced by a new orchestral score. Like every other aspect of Breath of the Wild, it’s absolute bliss.
