God of War
The world didn’t ask for another God of War. Sony’s anti-hero outgrew his welcome during the PS3 era and it was difficult to see a route back that wouldn’t be yet another rehash with more bombastic set-pieces. Only, with the God of War reboot, Sony Santa Monica ingeniously went the other direction, scaling it down and creating a more intimate tale of father and son. The story, while predictable, is gloriously told, and it’s all interspersed with some of the finest third-person melee combat around. That axe throw really is something to behold.

God of War
Quite possibly the greatest masterpiece yet released for the PS4, God of War is an artistic and technical triumph. Sitting snugly been linear and open-world has allowed Sony Santa Monica to lavish incredible detail on God of War’s Norse world, allowing players to explore the various otherworldly realms of Norse cosmology. Kratos can be scaling mountains one minute, battling in an elven city the next. God of War is so consistently varied and arresting in its visual design it would be impossible not include it in this category.
