Best Sci-Fi
In space, no one can hear you vote. Don’t let that stop you though, as these games are the latest and greatest in interstellar travel and all things fantastically futuristic. The nominees considered, will push the boundaries of reality, offering us the chance to embrace incredible wonders from the comfort of our own homes. Boldly they explore the dark frontier of space and push our imaginations to the limits. This genre is one of the most difficult to get right, as the creators of the title have to maintain believability, while still wowing us with stuff that could happen but hasn't.
While long the domain of beards and kobolds, Age of Wonders has benefited immensely from its sci-fi about-turn. Age of Wonders: Planetfall is turn-based alien exploration which more than gives Civilization: Beyond Earth a run for its money. It’s Civ meets XCOM, culminating in a hideously addictive 4X strategy game which left us clicking away until the wee hours of the morning.

A surprising gem, Void Bastards is a roguelike with the substance to back up its style. It’s the cel-shaded, comic book-style visuals which will grab you first though, and Void Bastards is one hell of a looker, from the onomatopoeic written sound effects to the instantly recognisable colour palette. It’s got the FPS chops to back it up though, with 5-minute ship runs implementing that crucial just-one-more-go factor.
