Gaming continues to mature at an incredible rate. The titles we loved just a decade ago have rapidly aged as developers learn new tricks, both in terms of gameplay and visuals. Whatever happens though, these are still fantastic games, and it’s great when new life can be breathed into them thanks to a loving remaster. Some are necessary, some aren’t, but we believe these are the best of the bunch this year.

Mafia: Definitive Edition

Remastering a game takes a lot of skill and time, but remaking a game takes even more. Mafia: Definitive Edition not only brings the classic tale of gangsters to modern systems with better graphics, but also streamlines the process to make it an even better experience than the original, and that was already a stand out title.

Final Fantasy VII Remake

How do you bring back a classic to a whole new generation? Not just in terms of hardware, but also in audience. Final Fantasy VII Remake does it with aplomb. Here we get the iconic original with all new graphics, but also greatly expanded story. Giving old players another reason to pick it up again and enjoy this classic while drawing a new generation of fans.

Tony Hawks Pro Skater 1 and 2

Another beloved classic returns with new and updated features. Skating games are coming back in full force now, but whilst they may be focusing a lot on detailed physics and realistic worlds, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater brings back that simplistic joy of arcade-y style gameplay. Oh and being able to build your own death traps for other players to download is just as fun as it was back then.

Destroy All Humans! Remake

Taking a classic and making it better whilst also releasing it for a remarkably competitive price is a huge task. Yet the Destroy All Humans! Remake exemplifies that and then some, paving the way for how to really remaster a beloved classic and release it to the world. It looks better, feels better, and is just downright just the best way to experience this beloved gem.
