Fate/Zero blog series (part 2)

<< PART 1

Here is the second part of my Fate/Zero review. Sorry about the long delay, I only write during my spare time and it hardly comes these days. So I hope you like it :)

CHARACTERS

Fate/Zero has good character developments. Each character interwind with one another and their motivations make them easily relatable. Another unique point about this series is that for the first few episodes, it's hard to distinguish main characters from the rest, since most of them get equal screen time. This creates an effect where viewers can root for different characters, and since they work in pairs (Servant/Master relationship), one may like a Master but dislike the Servant and vice-versa.

Fate/Zero feels like a chess game

Many of the early events in particular feel like part of an overarching chess game, as pieces are sacrificed in order to achieve a bigger goal. The characters are given the same respect, particularly in regards to their motivations, and in some cases important characters are subjected to deep psychoanalysis. This means that, when we learn why Kariya intensely despises Tokiomi, or why Kiritsugu and Kirie so naturally form a rivalry lined with respectful fear, the reasons make sense straight away.

In the first episode, most of the Servant/Master pairs are established, but it's up to viewers to figure out the identity of the heroic spirits. They are not easily revealed since some of their traits are altered (you would be surprised heheh), instead information is given bit by bit. This also creates tension because in Fate universe, information is a weapon. If a Servant's identity is revealed, they can be easily countered.

Wide range of characters, who would you root for?

For the Masters, most of them are calculating. At the start of the war when everyone is on equal terms, the Masters planned their actions carefully to put themselves ahead. There are short-term secret alliances and special Servant summoning contracts. Every advantage must be taken and every mistake costs. These set a serious tone to the story in contrast to the light-high-school-themed Stay Night sequel.

STYLE

Fate/Zero is not an all-action anime, although several fights are present (they're awesome by the way, no other anime features Babylonian spaceship vs. F15 jet fighter :D). It's dialogue-heavy, due to the fact it's a prequel of another anime called Fate/Stay Night. Thus its main objective is to give viewers back story of the Holy Grail War, plus information about characters who will appear in the sequel. The first episode is a 50 minutes long talk show; it put some people off, especially newcomers. But for fan of the series, the info is welcomed since not much about the Holy Grail War is explained in Fate/Stay Night.

Are you not entertained?

So you may think that Fate/Zero could be boring, but the beautiful thing about it does not lie in action sequences or flashy battles, but in the well written dialogues and logical story build up. I especially enjoyed the scene in episode 11, when the Three Kings (King of Heroes, King of Conquerors and King of Knights) sat down and had a debate about their ambition and ideology. They put aside their differences and respected one another. It's interesting to see three famous historical figures from different timelines to face one another not only in battle, but in a discussion as well.

SUMMARY

The story can be summarised in one word: TRAGIC. After seeing the tragic fates of several characters, question like this would spring to viewers’ mind: Is death ultimately the tragic end or is it an escape of our tragic lives? Very few characters have achieved their lifelong wish, but it costs them more than they could have imagined. Some would be lost on their chosen path (Saber) while others sacrificed all they had to obtain one wish (Kiritsugu).

"Don't cry little girl", say that to her and she will have your head

If we look at the final moments of the psychopath Ryunosoke, it’s very symbolic. The thing that he seeks his whole life, and excites him the most, was what he had in his body all along. Or Rider’s smile of satisfaction when he was about to die, his death was the most physically painful out of all deaths in the series, and although he didn’t get his wish, yet he was still smiling until the very end. Other characters such as Berserker had very simple wish, to let King Arthur know of his feeling and respect he had for the king when he was alive.

In the end, the name of the series is Fate/Zero, which depicts the start of a long journey. In the final minutes, we are shown the conversation between Kiritsugu and Shirou which shows that even though one’s story may have ended, but another will continue in their path. This reminds me of a quote I’ve heard: “Future generations will not remember your name, but they will remember the legacy you left behind after your death”.

Story: 9/10

Characters: 9/10

(I will soon be doing characters analysis of Fate/Zero :D)

It's on my watch list, heard good things about it. My friend also recommends Ghost in a Shell, so many to watch, so little time lol.
