Hi all, I would like to share with you my personal review of the Steam-Link and Steam controller. I have been using it for a few weeks now and I think I have used it enough to give a realistic opinion on this new piece of hardware from Valve. I have played a dozen or so games like MAD MAX as well as several non-Steam games like Diablo III just to see if they work just as good as the rest. Ok:
**Steam Link**
Coming in the size of a coffee coaster this little thing is pretty amazing to be honest. It was a breeze to set-up. I took it out of the package and plugged it in. After a short update I was ready to go. I decided to go "wired" for my connection. I currently have a 12mb cable connection. I'm using the Steam link on my 2015 Samsung 55 inch LED Smart TV.I then turned on the Steam controller and after a short firmware update it configured and was paried to the Link no problems. I played several games and all played smooth 1080P@60 FPS. The only game I could not load was Homeworld Remastered. For some reason every time I loaded it up the screen would just turn pink. I'm not sure what the issue is but most likely it is a display setting I have to adjust. I then loaded up Diablo III and sure as there is a sun in the sky the game loaded and played no problems. From what I can tell there was no noticeable input lag. If there is, I didn't feel it or see it, but this depends a bit on your TV was well. My Samsung has one of the best rated input-lag scores so make sure your TV is decent or results will vary. You can also minimize "big picture" mode and surf the internet like you were on your monitor. I personally went out and bought a no-frill wireless keyboard and mouse from Logitech so I can surf just like I was on my PC-but now in 55 inches, which by the way is pretty awesome!
**Steam Controller**
I'm still on the fence about this. What I don't like is the controller is clicky-clanky loud. I swear they made it to be as loud as possible every time you click it. It fits nice in my hands but I found the weight is just a little bit too heavy for my tastes. It works fine in games and even has a mouse pad that you can use in replace of a mouse. I also used the Link with my PlayStation 4 controller but some features are not compatable like the rumble feature. Also the battery life of the PS4 controller is horrible so I would rather use the Steam controller as it will last as long as your batteries last. So all in all, I would say the Steam controller is a good option for us "PC gamers" but it takes some time to get used to and some games work better then others...
At the end of the day I would honestly recommend the Steam link to any PC gamer that wants to play PC games on there big screen. As I type this eB games is offering two free games with any Link product. I bought both for around $110 Canadian...
My rating: 9/10 Steam Link
My rating: 7/10 Steam Controller
Hey, no problem! It is well worth the cheap price but I would suggest going "wired" for best results…
Yeah looks like I got no choice. I will have to move the router… Our house is 20+ years old and has no wired network installed… :/
