The almost free VR headset you probably already have and don't realise it.

Spoiler alert: I should probably preface this blog by saying that it's not about using your phone to view VR content in the play store.... not knocking it if that's your thing though, but rather using your phone as a VR headset for your PC to play games on Steam and other VR content on your PC.

It's  no secret that the price of VR tends to be pretty steep, with headsets going for as much as $800, fortunately new entry level headsets are coming on to the market lately in the $200 range, which in my opinion is much closer to the sweet spot.... give it another year or two and technology will have continued to improve, bringing much higher quality VR headsets to those without alot of cash to burn........ but what if you don't want to pay anything?

Well there is some good news.... if you have a mid range or better phone from the last couple years, you might not have to, except of course for the cost of some cheap goggles, and the cost of a nifty client/server app or two. You can easily keep the cost under USD $30 for the whole experience as long as your phone is up to snuff.

You're going to need a phone with a Gyroscope sensor, a decent enough SOC to stream video from your PC to your phone at an acceptable frame rate, and preferably, a screen of decent size and resolution..... All of those are pretty easy to come by today even in phones at the $100 range.

As for the software you're going to need, you have two choices, or perhaps you'd like to try both?

The first would be VRidge from Riftcat https://riftcat.com/vridge, this software package goes for USD $15 for the full version, but is free to try. I've tried this one myself and it works surprisingly well in my opinion, it allows you to stream VR from your PC to your phone either using your WIFI network, or through USB tethering, in my opinion USB tethering is by far the faster and more reliable option, you just have to make sure your phone is capable of it.

The next software option would be Trinus https://www.trinusvirtualreality.com/, this package costs USD $10, and is also free to try. Much like VRidge, it works either over your WIFI network, or a USB connection, and I'm sure the same holds true that the USB connection is probably the faster more reliable option in this case as well.... I'm not sure if this one requires tethering, or if all USB functions are managed entirely through the app, which IMO would be the better method. I've not tried this one myself, but I definitely intend to.

So, there ya go guys.... we now finally have some poor mans VR options thanks to the ever evolving technology in our phones...... I have no idea how long these options have been around, but I've just recently learned of them myself, and was ecstatic about it..... I'd venture to guess that many people here at GD were not aware these options existed either.
