Son in law asking about requirements for collage laptop
Written by: Xanatos340 - 23:12 Apr-11-2018

So, as the title says my son in law is going to Michigan Tech this fall and thought the requirements they post for a laptop are a bit excessive.

 http://www.mtu.edu/admissions/laptop/

He's enrolled in a mechanical engineering program, and he talked about this list with his engineering teacher and he also said they seem a bit unreasonable, as MTech uses the same engineering program that his high school does. The computers run on old core 2 quads, and 8gb RAM, with old W5000s. I find it strange that his admissions contact is really pushing for a $3500 laptop that seems more designed for playing games that actual workloads. We're looking for someone who has a recommendation for a laptop or specs to find a laptop around $1000-1500.

I mean, get a older HP Elitebook 8770w, or Dell Precision M6800, throw in a GTX 1070/1060, and you're good. Or, you might consider getting a Eurocomm Laptop

For 50$ more there is the same laptop for a total of 600$, but with a 128GB SSD and 1TB HDD, very much recommended!

Thank you both, this is exactly what I was expecting in terms of requirements, and he has had his eye on a couple refurbished ones.

They did the same to me way way way back when I was going to college for IT. It's so the University covers their ass basically. Yes they may be using the same software now but they can't say if they will continue using through out the time you are in college. The specs they are giving you is for a laptop that will supposedly last your complete college life with the chance that software and hardware requirements may change anytime with in that period. Imagine if they recommended a laptop that runs what software is needed now, next year they switch to software that is more demanding and the laptop can't run it. Parents would be lining up with pitch forks and torches marching to the school that they were told to buy a laptop with certain requirements and a year later they have to buy another one because the first one is obsolete. In all honesty an i5 for engineering isn't unreasonable.

You can easily grab a laptop that meets the recommended for under $800 just about anywhere.

Less than $500 if you don't mind refurbished.

Now I'm not saying either of these are "great laptops" I suspect you get what you pay for, but they DO meet requirements!
