The Athlon 200GE the little apu that could most of the time (review)
Written by: wolfe1924 - 21:04 Jan-05-2019

Introduction

i wanted to build a budget pc i could upgrade in the future but could get some use out of it now also so i decided to go with a budget build on am4 featuring this apu it astonished me in some tasks and let me down in others some games i thought ohh this thing cant run it it did some stuff i thought it should be able to handle no problem i have mixed feelings about this apu but overall good ones

Part list

AMD ATHLON 200GE APU 3.2GHZ 2 THREAD 4 CORE 4MB CACHE (locked no oc)

ASROCK B450 PRO 4

GSKILL RIPJAWS 2X4GB 2666MHZ

ROSEWILL 550W fully modular

INTEL SSD i had laying around

reasons for the parts the apu was the cheapest thing i could buy on a newer socket with a future upgrade path

the motherboard has alot of features and had a  good upgrade path in the future also

the ram will be upgraded in the future but for now i wanted to give this little apu the best chance it has to succeed the fastest ram it supports is 2666mhz and dual channel is more benificial then single stick

psu fully modular is nice

Overall Daily Use

my laptop has a i7 7700hq clocked at 2.8 turbos to 3.4 and 16gb of ram thats my main thing i use for gaming and web browsing and honestly i would sometimes think im using my laptop i could have multiple tabs open have a game such as prison architect running in the background and downloading a few things and never slowed down noticeably at all

Game Benchmarks

GTA 5- 36fps average in benchmark 1080p all AA off all settings normal dx11 in the benchmark i also played around a bit and it matched the results

Cities Skylines- runs good 1080p lowest settings until close to 100k population then it drops down to 20-21fps

Spintires Mudrunner- 1080p advanced graphics off, with cpu simulation quality and gpu quality up 29 fps average. 64 fps with cpu simulation quality and gpu quality down low on 1080p still

Borderlands 2- 1080p AA off foilage low draw distance high (not ultra) bullet decals off 32-40 fps = 36 fps average drops to unplayable sometimes briefly. i was unable to get 60fps regardless of settings i  to go to 800x600 i could throw all settings on max and it would maintain 60fps easily so there seems to be a massive bottleneck somewhere and resolution itself matters much more then any settings by a significant margin.

Dead Island- (normal one) 1080p max settings playable at 39-40 fps

Dead Island definitive edition- only playable 40fps on lowest settings on 1024x768 the versions looks are minimally different so i dont know why the performance is so bad

CSGO- 1080p low settings no AA 70 low 120 high average of 85

Civ 5- max settings AA off 40 fps

Conclusions

Overall im impressed what this little apu can do at its price point im typing this blog on it now actually. Some games could probably work better with additional configs of game files or community mods i just kept it vanilla. If you are on a extreme budget and just want a pc that works for yourself or build one for your parents i highly recommend this, due to intels manufacturing issues this is much cheaper then its Pentium options. If your on a extreme budget could go with less fancy ram and a a320 board since this apu doesnt allow over clocking and have a decent system for a good price. Or you can leave upgrade paths open like i did. i could do more testing on different games but this blog was already a few days late and i had to hastily put this together hence the format is not the best. Any further questions feel free to put in comments below, the link to the parts will be just below this in CAD

The Athlon 200GE is a decent CPU but for me personally i would still build a system for someone using the 2200G just because for any future games i would overclock the Vega 8 to around 1600MHz just for a better gaming experience.
Overall if i was to build a system around the 200GE it would be more for like a 4K media PC since i know the Vega 3 is able to play 4K media without any problems.

at the time this was a budget pc and still is but I wanted a upgrade path and at the time of purchase the 2200g was a little over double the Athlon, the Athlon being $60 and 2200G being $129 normally theres not that much of a price discrepancy so if both were there normal price then you have a good point

I feel the Nintendo Switch's Tegra x1 chip gets similar results which gets me excited for the potential the Switch holds for certain games if they were to get a port :)

they managed to port some really impressive games so far such as doom and wolfenstien 2 so if done correctly it should have a good future
