Don't sleep on motion interpolation
Written by: penoys - 01:00 Mar-15-2019

Recently bought a 4k TV and been gaming on it (a Samsung NU8000).

Like any good gamer, always turned on game mode and didnt touch the TV's game mode plus, which does motion interpolation for gaming. But out of boredom, I tried it and was pleasantly impressed. I honestly could not detect additional input lag and it was smooth as heck.

I looked it up and apparently, at 4k, this TV's input lag on game mode is 17.8ms. Interpolating to 60fps adds 6ms. Interpolating to 120fps adds another 5.5ms. Amazing considering even good gaming TVs will easily add 50ms of lag when using interpolation. I'm probably getting less lag since I do mostly 1440p. I unfortunately dont have an AMD card and am unable to use freesync, which supposedly cuts 1440p input lag from 9.7ms to 6.5ms (no interpolation ofc).

I understand how for a lot of folks this is double blasphemy. Not only am I gaming on a tv, I'm also being positive on motion interpolation. Just trying to say this tech is improving.. has improved a whole lot and will likely continue to improve.. and gaming on a sofa is heavenly for old farts like me :)

I'm wondering right now how well this thing works with 30fps console gaming. Since moving to PC, I've been spoiled by 60fps so I'm not really looking to go back to 30fps -- though ps4 exclusives are certainly tempting. Maybe I will dust off my ancient ps3 just to experiment.

Not a blasphemy at all, I've never had a problem with gaming on a TV. They are perfectly fine.

With all the latencies combined the matrix latency isn't very important until it reaches something like 100ms+ to begin to be noticeable. So 17.8ms and higher is just fine.

Though marketing for it brilliant, ignore all and any other latencies and pretend that the matrix latency is the only one, most people wouldn't be bothered to research and would blindly trust. XD

Have played on a tv (using a pc/laptop) for a good couple of years now. Imo if you good playing with a gamepad, you good playing on any decent tv.
I gamed on our now 8yr old tv and I had no complaints (other than the size). So we got this new one just coz we were due for an upgrade.. and I'm just impressed at how good TVs have gotten for gaming. Although it seems like samsung is ahead here
