turning a medicore Desktop into a mid range Gaming PC!
Written by: chenzen - 15:54 May-12-2019

I recently acquired an HP 500-00t Pavilion desktop with an i3-3320 and a GT 625, now it was free so I didn't scoff at it too much. However when it came to playing some games I found that it came up extremely short due to the low end hardware. here's some benchmarks

all games were preset to low settings at 720p

Watch dogs: 11 FPS

Fallout 4: 8 FPS

Rebel galaxy: 40 FPS

Borderlands 2: 60 FPS

Fallout NV: 25 FPS

Now after looking up the specific hardware for this desktop I found that the motherboard was the Foxconn H-Joshua-H61-uATX HP name: Joshua, and it had some upgrade options. I figured if I put a little money into it I could make a viable mid range machine capable of medium to high settings in gaming so I went to work. After scouring eBay I decided on the i5-3470 CPU, RX 550 2gb variant, an EVGA 600 watt PSU I picked up on clearance from best buy and 16 gb of RAM. now what were my results after the upgrade? massive improvement in terms of gaming performance

Watch dogs (medium at 1080p): 40 FPS

Fallout 4 (medium at 1080p): 30-50 FPS

Rebel Galaxy (ultra at 1080p): 60 FPS

Borderlands 2 (ultra at 1080):60 FPS

fallout NV (ultra at 1080p): 60 FPS

Now I could've just sat and waited to do a FULL system build with a ryzen 5 and rx 580. but I only spent maybe $200 on all the parts and this is a great backup machine, and I plan on using this machine for quite some time. So if you ever see an old desktop keep in mind there are always options available to you! thanks for reading!

I've heard that the RX 550 is bad value. How much did yours cost?

Not bad. I got my RX 460 for about $50. How do these compare? I haven't played any of those games.

I think they are pretty much on par with each other, the Rx has a 4gb variant that I almost bought. I'm happy with the results of the card

the rx 550 is 15-25% slower than the rx 460.
