Playable FPS
Written by: steepgnomeking - 21:46 Mar-19-2013

This year so far has had 2 very demanding games so far that have been released and hopefully more to come. With the excited release of Crysis 3 a lot of people felt their was need to once again have a ultra powerful pc and that it would be pushed to its limits. Another game just recently released has been Tomb Raider. This game looked amazing and included a little feature known as TressFX that on first release was so taxing on Nvidia cards it was not playable.

After some game patches and graphics drivers these 2 games have been made quite playable on a multitude of systems and allowed for a greater visual experience while still keeping a playable fps. From reading the forums it has been seen that some people with certain setups are quite able to play these games on a high settings while still being playable for them. But once I see the fps some people are playing it i'm wondering what is a playable fps for people.

For me anything under 40 is unplayable as I see the game as laggy and it seems to skip. While I know that not everyone has the same idea of playable fps I would like to get a general sampling and maybe a reason why. Now I know that this question can change depending on what game is being played from an fps to a point and click adventure game. This would just be a gernal rule of thumb.

Minumum playable fps

For me minimum FPS should be atleast 16 but at 16 FPS,It would be something like a slow motion move.Anythinh above 30 FPS is perfect.

25 should be enough, however, due to slight oscillations during gameplay I prefer at least 30+ to be safe. Everything below 25 is too low - you probably wont notice lag in 20-25 range, but gameplay will be a bit slowed down. Stable 30+ is enough for most games, except those few that have really fast-paced action.

Well it depends, on FPS and racing games I'd say 30+, on other games like strategy or 3rd person 25+ is just fine

I've been playing The Witcher 2 on 15 - 30 fps (min and max respectively) and it seems quite normal, just got used to it I guess xD

I had a 4770, which blew up. So I had to rely on the integrated GPU for a while. Now, I have a GTX 550 Ti :3

Anything under 40 is unplayable? What about games that have double-buffered vsync and run with extremely smooth 30 FPS ;)

Don't use vsync I find frame rate limter to be much more effective otherwise the framerate jumps around to much. But that would be like deadspace where the in game v-sync locked you at 30fps and that was not smooth for me. console gaming is not the funnest because some of the games are quite laggy not even counting sometimes they cant even reach a constant 30 fps.

Looks like you'll have to make a re-poll, to see am before this I will said to you that you can not put new items to the top of poll, can only add to bottom.

I like to stay at a minimum of 25 but I think the lowest I ever recorded was 21 with Metro 2033 on low or medium settings with AA off, etc and I was using FRAPS which tends to knock down a few FPS. With my GPU, I am happy when I get around 25-30fps and I honestly do not notice and lag or anything except in events like explosions in Saints Row 3. Even then it is slight and is really no problem.

20 FPS is life THEATENING!(AVOID) 25 FPS is the minimum, the lag is noticable but not life so threatening. At 30 FPS I find the image to be smooth and I personaly don't notice any lag. At 50+ FPS the games are amazingly smooth to play and controls feel very accutate.

Hy guys! I wanna buy a new processor, but i dont know: FX8120,FX8150,FX8320,Phenom II X4 BE or Phenom II X6 1045T. If i had to change to an FX i need to change my motherboard too, cuz i have one with an am3 socket. I wanna use my PC to record [without lag], render [FAST!!!], and gaming. Pls help me! :P

A good (and easy to remember) rule of thumb I use for buying PC parts is to buy the most you can afford. With a CPU, also make sure you buy something with 4 physical cores.

Someone said me, the FX is not a really 8 core processor, don't have true cores. So if really not, i don't waste my money... If I have to choose between PII 965 BE and PII 1045T, which one i should choose?

I don't know a ton about AMD CPUs (I'm a dyed-in-the-wool Intel guy), but what's probably the truth is the CPU has 4 physical cores and 4 virtual cores. The CPU has the ability to create 4 extra virtual cores whenever it needs them to parse data. So, it's technically an 8 core processor, but there are only 4 actual, physical cores present.
I'm sure if I'm wrong some AMD fans here will correct me.

Its so very confusing with amd architecture you can call it an 8 core cpu even though it does not have 8 real cores. AMD has moduels that basically act as 1.5 cores. Thats the simplest I can make it. If you get a fx processor with am3+ than you will be safe with the new amd cpus that will come out later this year because they are going to be on the am3+ socket.

This is a fantastic topic of discussion. Good work, gnome!
Personally, I can live with 25-30 FPS as a minimum, depending on the game. A fast-paced shooter (where you're constantly whipping your viewpoint around) needs at least 30 FPS. But for RPGs and a lot of third-person games, I can excuse 25 FPS.

Thanks, it really is so dependent on the game and the game type. But their is always a minimum for all game types.
