In terms of overall gaming performance, the AMD Opteron 2224 X2 is noticeably better than the AMD Athlon X2 7750 Black Edition when it comes to running the latest games. This also means it will be less likely to bottleneck more powerful GPUs, allowing them to achieve more of their gaming performance potential.

The Athlon X2 7750 was released over a year more recently than the Opteron 2224 X2, and so the Athlon X2 7750 is likely to have better levels of support, and will be more optimized for running the latest games.

The Athlon X2 7750 and the Opteron 2224 X2 both have 2 cores, and so are quite likely to struggle with the latest games, or at least bottleneck high-end graphics cards when running them. With a decent accompanying GPU, the Athlon X2 7750 and the Opteron 2224 X2 may still be able to run slightly older games fairly effectively.

More important for gaming than the number of cores and threads is the clock rate. Problematically, unless the two CPUs are from the same family, this can only serve as a general guide and nothing like an exact comparison, because the clock cycles per instruction (CPI) will vary so much.

The Athlon X2 7750 and Opteron 2224 X2 are not from the same family of CPUs, so their clock speeds are by no means directly comparable. Aside from the clock rate, the next-most important CPU features for PC game performance are L2 and L3 cache size. Bear in mind that although it is better to have a larger cache, the larger it is, the higher the latency, so a balance has to be struck.

The Opteron 2224 X2 has a 1024 KB bigger L2 cache than the Athlon X2 7750, and although the Opteron 2224 X2 does not appear to have an L3 cache, its larger L2 cache means that it wins out in this area.

The maximum Thermal Design Power is the power in Watts that the CPU will consume in the worst case scenario. The lithography is the semiconductor manufacturing technology being used to create the CPU - the smaller this is, the more transistors that can be fit into the CPU, and the closer the connections. For both the lithography and the TDP, it is the lower the better, because a lower number means a lower amount of power is necessary to run the CPU, and consequently a lower amount of heat is produced.

The Athlon X2 7750 has a 24 Watt lower Maximum TDP than the Opteron 2224 X2, and was created with a 25 nm smaller manufacturing technology. What this means is the Athlon X2 7750 will consume significantly less power and consequently produce less heat, enabling more prolonged computational tasks with fewer adverse effects. This will lower your yearly electricity bill significantly, as well as prevent you from having to invest in extra cooling mechanisms (unless you overclock).

Mini ReviewAthlon X2 7750 Black Edition is a middle-class processor based on the 65nm, K10 architecture.

It offers 2 Physical Cores (2 Logical), clocked at 2.7GHz and 2MB of L3 Cache.
Among its many features, Virtualization is activated and the clock multiplier is unlocked, meaning it can be overclocked easily.

The processor DOES NOT integrate any graphics. and has a rated board TDP of 95W.

It offers average performance. This means it will become a bottleneck in some demanding applications.
For Socket F and Socket AM2 Opterons, each chip has a four-digit model number, in the form Opteron XZYY. For all Opterons, the first digit (the X) specifies the number of CPUs on the target machine:
1 - Designed for uniprocessor systems
2 - Designed for dual-processor systems
8 - Designed for systems with 4 or 8 processors
For Socket F and Socket AM2 Opterons, the second digit (the Z) represents the processor generation. Presently, only 2 (dual-core), DDR2, 3 (quad-core) and 4 (six-core) are used.
For all Opterons, the last two digits in the model number (the YY) indicate the clock frequency of a CPU, a higher number indicating a higher clock frequency. This speed indication is comparable to processors of the same generation if they have the same amount of cores, single-cores and dual-cores have different indications despite sometimes having the same clock frequency.
The suffix HE or EE indicates a high-efficiency/energy-efficiency model having a lower TDP than a standard Opteron. The suffix SE indicates a top-of-the-line model having a higher TDP than a standard Opteron.
