Heavy Rain packshot image
Heavy Rain is an interactive drama psychological thriller video game created by Quantic Dream exclusively for the PlayStation 3. The game is written and directed by Quantic
Dream's founder and CEO David Cage. Heavy Rain's story is a dramatic thriller modeled after film noir, featuring four protagonists involved with the mystery of the
Origami Killer, a serial killer who uses extended periods of rainfall to drown
his victims. Ethan Mars is trying to save his son
from being the next victim, while
investigative journalist Madison Paige,
FBI profiler Norman Jayden, and
private detective Scott Shelby are each
trying to track down clues to the Origami Killer's identity. The player
interacts with the game by performing
actions highlighted on screen related
to motions on the controller, and in
some cases, performing a series of quick time events during fast-paced action sequences. The player's decisions and actions during the game will affect the narrative; the main characters can be killed, and certain actions may lead to different scenes and endings.

Heavy Rain 1080p Ultra Custom PC Build Review

Prices and hardware reviewed and updated: 12th Jun 2021

If you are looking to buy a new PC that can play Heavy Rain then below you will find we explore exactly that. We are putting together a gaming PC build for Heavy Rain from a carefully selected set of our favourite hardware components that are priced best today. Its therefore our desire to consistently keep stable frame rates with top tier graphics options selected, returning the visuals upon a 1080p monitor screen. The hardware selection should give us all a good jumping off point when considering what might prove a good build and price for a PC to run Heavy Rain. We will update prices here as they change and switch out components as new, better hardware is released.

This title falls in the Adventure genre category, which itself can influence the type of hardware we might consider for this build. Something we sometimes dont consider is that the game would be developed in 2019 and therefore on hardware from around that period of time. We can also assume that hardware from around that period would be part of the targeted hardware, in terms of performance, by the developers, as they provide graphical options for the hardware capabilities available. It is currently not on our list of most demanding games. Also it is falling outside of our most popular games list at the moment. With this info in hand to help guide our hardware build choices we will now select today’s best priced components that meet these game characteristics.

Choosing A Graphics Card For Our 1080p Heavy Rain PC Build

Our challenge is not overpaying for hardware we dont need, but making sure we get enough performance from our system that we can play Heavy Rain at 1080p ultra settings. Reviewing all the prices today our choice for best graphics card for this title points us squarely at the GeForce GTX 1660 Asus Phoenix 6GB. It is capable of delivering suitable frame rates at ultra 1080p. For reference, the lowest price recorded by us so far for the GeForce GTX 1660 Asus Phoenix 6GB is $219.99 on 31st Jan 2020. With a price of $219.99 today its certainly very competitive, considering the performance this gpu can return.

We also want the graphics card to have at least 4GB VRAM onboard. The video card in this build has 6 which will act as a good data buffer between the processor and the graphics hardware.

Selecting The Right Heavy Rain 1080p Motherboard and CPU

Finding a well priced motherboard, like the one we are putting in our build today really helps tie things together in terms of performance and opens up other hardware options that become available to us later in the selection. The MSI B360M PRO-VD Intel mATX LAG1151 motherboard is at a great price point and lets us select our desired LGA 1151 cpu. As the GeForce GTX 1660 Asus Phoenix 6GB wants a suitable good pairing when looking to run Heavy Rain well at this resolution. The Core i5-9400F 6-Core 2.9GHz is currently priced at a competitive $181.99. Our cheapest price recorded for the Core i5-9400F 6-Core 2.9GHz was $119.99, which we spotted on 16th Mar 2020.

And with the motherboard costing $49.46 this really helps pull the PC we are building together. We have checked the mobo prices and found that on 28th Dec 2019, this motherboard was priced at a low of $32.99.

How To Choose The Best RAM For Heavy Rain At The Right Price

One of the most important hardware parts of this computer is the system memory or RAM. To make sure our resolution target and frame rates are met we have chosen to put in Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB (1x8GB) DDR4 2666MHz. This is currently priced at $32.99 and is well priced compared to the system memory market today. A price point for this RAM was down to $29.49 on 2nd Feb 2020.

PC Performance Review at 1080p Ultra Settings on Heavy Rain

Now on to the frame rates for our Heavy Rain running on GeForce GTX 1660 Asus Phoenix 6GB at 1080p. We should see an average of 85 FPS on High settings or you could push up the quality to Ultra, which would get us 61 FPS.

An Alternative Heavy Rain Graphics Card Option for 1080p

Not everyone is a fan of team Nvidia, so if you are after a GPU from the other side then perhaps take a look at our suggested AMD card, the Radeon RX 580 XFX GTR XXX 8GB. It is placed at 4% worse performance difference and certainly capable of delivering up Heavy Rain frames on a par with our primary GPU selection. We have also selected it based on its price today, which finds it at $164.99.
