Desperate to find a space strategy with depth and space battles that you can zoom in to watch up close that will run on my less than game specialist laptop. Is this possibly it? Do I even want this to be it? Cheers.

It has some nice views, yes, and it has some depth too with diplomacy and research and all, though personally I find this game boring. If you get this game. mod it. The Star Trek mod is fantastic. Alternatively you can get Homeworld II, it uses the third axes of space for movement unlike every other space RTS.

Amazing game, works well on slow machines. if it runs on my intel gma4500 chip at 40 fps, it will run on just about anything
