The opening chapter in the Legacy of Kain series is an epic hack-and-slash role-playing game, played from a top-down perspective, and covering a huge world of varied indoor and outdoor environments. When it was first released, it received high praise for its mature, involving storyline, its intriguing anti-hero, and its fantastic voice acting; a rarity in videogames at the time. Although it is technically dated by today's standards, and would probably appeal most to older gamers, the plot remains as strong as ever.
The player takes the role of Kain, a selfish nobleman who is murdered by a band of brigands. A Necromancer visits Kain in the Underworld, and offers him a way to avenge his death: by returning to the world of the living as a vampire.
Kain rashly accepts the proposal, and soon he is involved in a much bigger quest than he anticipated. His hunger for vengeance leads him into battle against a number of powerful, dangerous and manipulative sorcerers, as his agenda becomes mixed with the task of repairing the sacred 'Pillars of Nosgoth' and restoring Balance to the land.
