Can someone help me? When I fly ships in space, the game becomes incredibly laggy, but only when I look down at terrain.

Go into your settings.cfg and change the values of the terrain presets to be lower(The planets section, #'s very from 1 - (I think) 12)

I'd say low-medium, the game is horribly optimized - I struggle to stay at 25-30FPS at medium myself.

No, I'd actually suggest low-medium, only because it isn't very well optimized. I can't even max it, I have to turn some things off in order to get 35FPS.

Sadly, yes. But you should be able to run it at minimum w/ pretty good FPS, but this is a game I'd pass on if I was gonna record gameplay w/ that rig.

Your computer is not 'crappy', it isn't high-end but is far from crappy.
You should be able to get playable(30+) FPS at max(Not sure if game has AA or not, but if it does then you may need to lower the AA for better frames)

Ok , i have this game.. it was about 5 FPS everywhere in kerbin SOI but then i changed file setting.cmg (KerbinOcean , mindistance :1) and now i have about 30 FPS :)

i would say try on low to start but then move your way up for the best graphics to performance ratio :)
