In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the AMD Radeon HD 6870 XFX Black Edition are noticeably better than the AMD Radeon HD 7770 Sapphire GHz OC Edition.

The HD 7770 has a 210 MHz higher core clock speed than the HD 6870, but the HD 6870 has 16 more Texture Mapping Units than the HD 7770. As a result, the HD 6870 exhibits a 6.6 GTexel/s better Texture Fill Rate than the HD 7770. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The HD 7770 has a 210 MHz higher core clock speed than the HD 6870, but the HD 6870 has 16 more Render Output Units than the HD 7770. As a result, the HD 6870 exhibits a 11.7 GPixel/s better Pixel Fill Rate than the HD 7770. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The HD 7770 was released over a year more recently than the HD 6870, and so the HD 7770 is likely to have better driver support, meaning it will be more optimized for running the latest games when compared to the HD 6870.

The Radeon HD 7770 Sapphire GHz OC Edition and the Radeon HD 6870 XFX Black Edition have the same amount of video memory, but are likely to provide slightly different experiences when displaying game textures at high resolutions.

The HD 6870 has 67.2 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the HD 7770, which means that the memory performance of the HD 6870 is much better than the HD 7770.

We would recommend a PSU with at least 450 Watts for the HD 7770 and a PSU with at least 650 Watts for the HD 6870. The HD 6870 requires 71 Watts more than the HD 7770 to run. The difference is significant enough that the HD 6870 may have an adverse affect on your yearly electricity bills in comparison to the HD 7770.

The differences include increased memory and core clocks, from 1125MHz to 1250MHz and from 1000MHz to 1150MHz, respectively. A new quiet and efficient cooling system is also available.
Benchmarks indicate a 9,5% performance boost when compared to the standard Radeon HD 7770.
Benchmarks indicate that the most demanding games (e.g. Metro 2033) will run at the highest settings but not at extreme resolutions (due to the limited memory size).
