In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the AMD Radeon HD 7470A are marginally better than the Nvidia GeForce 8600 GT 512MB GDDR3.

The Radeon HD 7470A has a 235 MHz higher core clock speed and 4 more Texture Mapping Units than the 8600 GT. This results in the Radeon HD 7470A providing 6.9 GTexel/s better texturing performance. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The Radeon HD 7470A has a 235 MHz higher core clock speed than the 8600 GT and the same number of Render Output Units. This results in the Radeon HD 7470A providing 1.9 GPixel/s better pixeling performance. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The Radeon HD 7470A was released over three years more recently than the 8600 GT, and so the Radeon HD 7470A is likely to have far better driver support, meaning it will be much more optimized and ultimately superior to the 8600 GT when running the latest games.

The Radeon HD 7470A has 512 MB more video memory than the 8600 GT, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. However, the overall memory performance is about the same.

The 8600 GT has 9.6 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the Radeon HD 7470A, which means that the memory performance of the 8600 GT is marginally better than the Radeon HD 7470A.

The Radeon HD 7470A has 400 Shader Processing Units and the GeForce 8600 GT 512MB GDDR3 has 32. However, the actual shader performance of the Radeon HD 7470A is 202 and the actual shader performance of the 8600 GT is 43. The Radeon HD 7470A having 159 better shader performance is not particularly notable, as altogether the 8600 GT performs better when taking into account other relevant data.

The Radeon HD 7470A transistor size technology is 40 nm (nanometers) smaller than the 8600 GT. This means that the Radeon HD 7470A is expected to run much cooler and achieve higher clock frequencies than the 8600 GT. While they exhibit similar graphical performance, the Radeon HD 7470A should consume less power than the 8600 GT.

The Radeon HD 7470A requires 18 Watts to run and the GeForce 8600 GT 512MB GDDR3 requires 46 Watts. We would recommend a PSU with at least 350 Watts for the 8600 GT, but we do not have a recommended PSU wattage for the Radeon HD 7470A. The 8600 GT requires 28 Watts more than the Radeon HD 7470A to run. The difference is not significant enough for the 8600 GT to have a noticeably larger impact on your yearly electricity bills than the Radeon HD 7470A.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewRadeon HD 7470A is used in All-In-One PCs. It's based on the Redwood chip and therefore features 400 Shader Processing Units on a 64-bit memory interface of standard DDR3. It's manufactured with either a 512MB or 1GB frame buffer and offers 20 TMUs and 8 ROPs.
Its gaming performance is average.
GeForce 8600 GT 512MB GDDR3 is one of the many variants of the fast-middle-class GeForce 8600 GT.
On this version, the GPU is equipped with 512MB of standard GDDR3. The architecture allows the use of 512MB, since the GPU's processing power is strong enough and the memory controller is up for the task of processing 512MB. Therefore, the performance is superior to the 256MB version and any other version of DDR2, including 1GB.
However, and due to its architecture limitations, modern demanding games will require reduced settings, even if they don't require more than 512MB of video ram. Very Demanding games like Metro 2033 are only playable at the lowest settings.
