In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the AMD Radeon HD 7870 DirectCU II 2GB Edition are massively better than the AMD Radeon HD 4730 .

The HD 7870 has a 260 MHz higher core clock speed and 48 more Texture Mapping Units than the HD 4730. This results in the HD 7870 providing 56.8 GTexel/s better texturing performance. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The HD 7870 has a 260 MHz higher core clock speed and 24 more Render Output Units than the HD 4730. This results in the HD 7870 providing 26.3 GPixel/s better pixeling performance. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The HD 7870 was released over a year more recently than the HD 4730, and so the HD 7870 is likely to have better driver support, meaning it will be more optimized for running the latest games when compared to the HD 4730.

The HD 7870 has 1536 MB more video memory than the HD 4730, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. This is supported by the fact that the HD 7870 also has superior memory performance overall.

The HD 7870 has 97.3 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the HD 4730, which means that the memory performance of the HD 7870 is massively better than the HD 4730.

The Radeon HD 7870 DirectCU II 2GB Edition has 1280 Shader Processing Units and the Radeon HD 4730 has 640. However, the actual shader performance of the HD 7870 is 1099 and the actual shader performance of the HD 4730 is 312. The HD 7870 having 787 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the HD 7870 delivers a massively smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the HD 4730.

The HD 7870 transistor size technology is 27 nm (nanometers) smaller than the HD 4730. This means that the HD 7870 is expected to run slightly cooler and achieve higher clock frequencies than the HD 4730.

The Radeon HD 4730 requires 110 Watts to run but there is no entry for the HD 7870. We would recommend a PSU with at least 450 Watts for the HD 4730, but we do not have a recommended PSU wattage for the HD 7870.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewRadeon HD 7870 DirectCU II 2GB Edition is a special edition of the powerful Radeon HD 7870. See the standard version for more information about it.
The new features include the DirectCU II cooling solution which is 20% more effective than the reference cooler, according to Asus and a small increase in the core-clock to 1010MHz as well as in the memory clock to 1210MHz.
Benchmarks indicate almost no performance boost when compared to the standard Radeon HD 7870 and so its performance is on level with the it as the boost is beneath 1%.
All games, including demanding one's, will run on the highest settings.
Radeon HD 4730 is a fast-middle-class GPU based on the RV770 CE Core.
Just like Radeon HD 4770, it features 640 Shading Units, 32 TMUs but only 8 ROPs. The core and memory clocks are very similar.
Benchmarks indicate Radeon HD 4730's performance is about 20% than Radeon HD 4770 meaning it's still a very solid GPU, almost on level with acclaimed GeForce 9800 GT.
