In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the AMD Radeon HD 7870 HIS IceQ Turbo Edition are marginally better than the Nvidia GeForce GTX 660 MSI Hawk 2GB Edition.

The HD 7870 has a 15 MHz higher core clock speed and the same number of Texture Mapping Units as the GTX 660. This results in the HD 7870 providing 1.2 GTexel/s better texturing performance. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The HD 7870 has a 15 MHz higher core clock speed and 8 more Render Output Units than the GTX 660. This results in the HD 7870 providing 9.2 GPixel/s better pixeling performance. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The GTX 660 was released less than a year after the HD 7870, and so they are likely to have similar driver support for optimizing performance when running the latest games.

Both GPUs exhibit very powerful performance, so it probably isn't worth upgrading from one to the other, as both are capable of running even the most demanding games at the highest settings.

The Radeon HD 7870 HIS IceQ Turbo Edition and the GeForce GTX 660 MSI Hawk 2GB Edition have the same amount of video memory, but are likely to provide slightly different experiences when displaying game textures at high resolutions.

The HD 7870 has 9.4 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the GTX 660, which means that the memory performance of the HD 7870 is marginally better than the GTX 660.

The Radeon HD 7870 HIS IceQ Turbo Edition has 1280 Shader Processing Units and the GeForce GTX 660 MSI Hawk 2GB Edition has 960. However, the actual shader performance of the HD 7870 is 1197 and the actual shader performance of the GTX 660 is 1104. The HD 7870 having 93 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the HD 7870 delivers a marginally smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the GTX 660.

We would recommend a PSU with at least 500 Watts for the HD 7870.

The differences include an increase in the core-clock that went from 1000MHz to 1100MHz and a new efficient cooling system.
Benchmarks indicate a 5% performance boost when compared to the standard Radeon HD 7870.
GeForce GTX 660 MSI Hawk 2GB Edition a special edition of GeForce GTX 660.
The new features include the Twin Frozr III Thermal Design cooling solution which, according to MSI, generates 20% more airflow than traditional fan design.
In terms of overclocking, the base-clock was increased from 980MHz to 1085MHz and the boost clock can now reach 1150MHz, instead of 1033MHz. The memory clock was left untouched.
The overclocking is therefore extreme and the performance boost is around 8% when compared to the standard GeForce GTX 660.
