In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia GeForce GTX 780 MSI Lightning Edition are significantly better than the Nvidia GeForce GTX 660 Ti.

The GTX 780 has a 65 MHz higher core clock speed and 80 more Texture Mapping Units than the GTX 660 Ti. This results in the GTX 780 providing 85.7 GTexel/s better texturing performance. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The GTX 780 has a 65 MHz higher core clock speed and 24 more Render Output Units than the GTX 660 Ti. This results in the GTX 780 providing 25 GPixel/s better pixeling performance. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The GTX 780 was released over a year more recently than the GTX 660 Ti, and so the GTX 780 is likely to have better driver support, meaning it will be more optimized for running the latest games when compared to the GTX 660 Ti.

Both GPUs exhibit very powerful performance, so it probably isn't worth upgrading from one to the other, as both are capable of running even the most demanding games at the highest settings.

The GTX 780 has 1024 MB more video memory than the GTX 660 Ti, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. This is supported by the fact that the GTX 780 also has superior memory performance overall.

The GTX 780 has 144.2 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the GTX 660 Ti, which means that the memory performance of the GTX 780 is massively better than the GTX 660 Ti.

The GeForce GTX 780 MSI Lightning Edition has 2304 Shader Processing Units and the GeForce GTX 660 Ti has 1344. However, the actual shader performance of the GTX 780 is 2380 and the actual shader performance of the GTX 660 Ti is 1317. The GTX 780 having 1063 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the GTX 780 delivers a massively smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the GTX 660 Ti.

The GeForce GTX 660 Ti requires 150 Watts to run but there is no entry for the GTX 780. We would recommend a PSU with at least 600 Watts for the GTX 780 and a PSU with at least 450 Watts for the GTX 660 Ti. The GTX 780 has been recommended a PSU with 150 Watts more than the GTX 660 Ti. The difference is significant enough that the GTX 780 may have an adverse affect on your yearly electricity bills in comparison to the GTX 660 Ti.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewGeForce GTX 780 MSI Lightning Edition is a special edition of the high-end GeForce GTX 780.
This edition comes with a custom dual fan cooling solution which by itself should allow a slight performance boost, as GeForce GTX 780 benefits from the GPU Boost 2.0 technology.
Also, it has been overclocked out of the box from 863MHz to 980MHz while its boost clock is now of 1033MHz. The memory clock was left untouched.
Benchmarks indicate a 8% performance boost when compared to the reference card.
GeForce GTX 660 Ti is a Performance Graphics Card based on the Kepler Architecture.

The Kepler Architecture was NVIDIA's big step to power efficiency. Each Stream Multiprocessor (SMX) now hosts 192 Shader Processing Units - against the 48 of older Fermi Architecture, and has been redesigned being now clocked at the same speed of the Central Unit. This means they are more energy efficient and will consequently lead to cooler operating temperatures. However, it also means they are weaker. It can be said that one Fermi SMX is as fast as 2 Kepler SMXs.
Additionally, and not available in all GPUs, Kepler also introduced the Boost Clock Feature. The Boost Clock is an even higher Clock Speed activated when in gaming mode and becomes the effective speed of the GPU. GPU
It equips a GPU GK104-300-KD-A2 which has 7 Stream Multiprocessors activated and thus offers 1344 Shader Processing Units, 112 TMUs and 24 ROPs. The Central Unit is initially clocked at 915MHz and goes up to 980MHz, in Turbo Mode.

The GPU accesses a 2GB frame buffer of fast GDDR5, through a 192-bit memory interface. The size of the frame buffer is adequate. The Memory Clock Operates at 1502MHz.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 150W, it requires at least a 450W PSU with two available 6-pin connectors.

At 1920x1080, the best suited resolution for GeForce GTX 660 Ti, benchmarks indicate its performance is a little over the older GeForce GTX 580.

System Suggestions
GeForce GTX 660 Ti is best suited for resolutions up to and including 1920x1080. We recommend a Strong Processor and 8GB of RAM for Optimal Performance.
