In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia GeForce GTX Titan WindForce 3X OC Edition are noticeably better than the AMD Radeon HD 7970 GHz Toxic 6GB Edition.

The HD 7970 has a 172 MHz higher core clock speed than the GTX Titan, but the GTX Titan has 96 more Texture Mapping Units than the HD 7970. As a result, the GTX Titan exhibits a 67.1 GTexel/s better Texture Fill Rate than the HD 7970. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The HD 7970 has a 172 MHz higher core clock speed than the GTX Titan, but the GTX Titan has 16 more Render Output Units than the HD 7970. As a result, the GTX Titan exhibits a 9.3 GPixel/s better Pixel Fill Rate than the HD 7970. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The GTX Titan was released less than a year after the HD 7970, and so they are likely to have similar driver support for optimizing performance when running the latest games.

Both GPUs exhibit very powerful performance, so it probably isn't worth upgrading from one to the other, as both are capable of running even the most demanding games at the highest settings.

We would recommend a PSU with at least 600 Watts for the GTX Titan. The two GPUs require the same amount of wattage to run. As such, there is no need to worry about which will more significantly affect your yearly electricity bills.

Mini ReviewGeForce GTX Titan WindForce 3X OC Edition is a special edition of GeForce GTX Titan. Check the page of the reference card to know more about its Core.
It features a new cooling system which "is equipped with two 8mm and four 6mm cooper heat-pipes".
It comes overclocked out of the box in the central unit, which was increased to 928MHz and can now achieve 980MHz, in Turbo Mode and surpass the 1GHz barrier, easily, as it's known, Titan has the Kepler GPU Boost 2.0, which raises the GPU's central unit and Shaders speeds to a frequency even higher to the one the Turbo Boost allows, if the GPU's temperature and Voltage allows it - and since Titan's cooling system is improved, the maximum possible value should be higher.
There are no benchmarks available but expect almost similar performance to GeForce GTX 690.
Radeon HD 7970 GHz Toxic 6GB Edition is a special edition of Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition.
It comes with 2 modes: a default core-clock of 1050MHz that goes up to 1100MHz in Turbo or a default core-clock of 1100MHz that goes up to 1200MHz. It also features a new cooling system with 2 huge fans. The memory clock will also be raised to 1600MHz, if using the highest option (lethal Turbo mode).
Using the lethal turbo mode, the performance boost is around 6% than reference Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition.
