Gaming Performance Comparison

Recommended System Requirements
Game Radeon R7 M265 Radeon HD 8850M

In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the AMD Radeon HD 8850M are noticeably better than the AMD Radeon R7 M265.

The Radeon R7 M265 has a 175 MHz higher core clock speed than the Radeon HD 8850M, but the Radeon HD 8850M has 16 more Texture Mapping Units than the Radeon R7 M265. As a result, the Radeon HD 8850M exhibits a 5.8 GTexel/s better Texture Fill Rate than the Radeon R7 M265. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The Radeon R7 M265 has a 175 MHz higher core clock speed than the Radeon HD 8850M, but the Radeon HD 8850M has 8 more Render Output Units than the Radeon R7 M265. As a result, the Radeon HD 8850M exhibits a 3.6 GPixel/s better Pixel Fill Rate than the Radeon R7 M265. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The Radeon R7 M265 was released less than a year after the Radeon HD 8850M, and so they are likely to have similar driver support for optimizing performance when running the latest games.

The Radeon R7 M265 and the Radeon HD 8850M have the same amount of video memory, but are likely to provide slightly different experiences when displaying game textures at high resolutions.

The memory bandwidth of the Radeon R7 M265 and the Radeon HD 8850M are the same, which means the Radeon R7 M265 and the Radeon HD 8850M have equal limitations when it comes to graphical data transfer.

The Radeon R7 M265 has 384 Shader Processing Units and the Radeon HD 8850M has 640. However, the actual shader performance of the Radeon R7 M265 is 269 and the actual shader performance of the Radeon HD 8850M is 496. The Radeon HD 8850M having 227 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the Radeon HD 8850M delivers a marginally smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the Radeon R7 M265.

The Radeon R7 M265 requires 35 Watts to run and the Radeon HD 8850M requires 45 Watts. The Radeon HD 8850M requires 10 Watts more than the Radeon R7 M265 to run. The difference is not significant enough for the Radeon HD 8850M to have a noticeably larger impact on your yearly electricity bills than the Radeon R7 M265.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewRadeon R7 M265 is a middle-class-level graphics card based on the second revision of the Graphics Core Next architecture.
It offers a core codenamed Marts XT that packs 384 Shader Processing Units, 24 TMUs and 8 ROPs, on a 128-bit memory interface of DDR3. While the central unit runs at 800MHz and goes up to 825MHz, in Turbo Mode, the memory clock operates at 1000MHz. The regular version should offer 2GB of video memory but expect to see gimmicks of up to 4GB.
Technically R7 M265 is just a higher-clocked Radeon HD 8750M and thus it should be able to run all of 2014's games at medium or high settings, using a 720p resolution.
This card should be paired with a decent Dual Core Processor at least 8GB of RAM.
Overview
Radeon HD 8850M is a Performance Mobile Graphics Card based on the Second Revision of the GCN Architecture.

Architecture
The GCN 1.1 Release adds support for AMD's TrueAudio Technology which does calculations of audio effects "better" than the CPU and further improves the Powertune Technology.

GPU
It equips a GPU codenamed Venus PRO which has 10 Compute Units activated and thus offers 640 Shader Processing Units, 40 TMUs and 16 ROPs. The Central Unit Initially Operates at 625MHz and goes up to 775MHz, in Turbo Mode.

Memory
The GPU accesses a 2GB frame buffer of DDR3, through a 128-bit memory interface. The size of the frame buffer is exaggerated and in no way benefits the GPU. The memory clock operates at 1000MHz.

Features
DirectX 11.0 Support (11.0 Hardware Default) and support for Crossfire, PowerTune Technology, Eyefinity, App Acceleration, HD3D, ZeroCore Power and other technologies.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 45W, it is suited for 17" or larger laptops.

Performance
Gaming benchmarks put its performance somewhat above NVIDIA's GeForce GT 750M.

System Suggestions
We recommend a Decent Processor (Intel Core i5 Mobile) and 8GB of RAM for a system with Radeon HD 8850M.
