In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the AMD Radeon HD 5850 Sapphire Vapor-X 1GB Edition are marginally better than the AMD Radeon HD 6850 GigaByte Edition.

The HD 6850 has a 85 MHz higher core clock speed than the HD 5850, but the HD 5850 has 24 more Texture Mapping Units than the HD 6850. As a result, the HD 5850 exhibits a 13.5 GTexel/s better Texture Fill Rate than the HD 6850. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The HD 6850 has a 85 MHz higher core clock speed than the HD 5850 and the same number of Render Output Units. This results in the HD 6850 providing 2.7 GPixel/s better pixeling performance. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The HD 6850 was released over a year more recently than the HD 5850, and so the HD 6850 is likely to have better driver support, meaning it will be more optimized for running the latest games when compared to the HD 5850.

The Radeon HD 5850 Sapphire Vapor-X 1GB Edition and the Radeon HD 6850 GigaByte Edition have the same amount of video memory, but are likely to provide slightly different experiences when displaying game textures at high resolutions.

The memory bandwidth of the Radeon HD 5850 Sapphire Vapor-X 1GB Edition and the Radeon HD 6850 GigaByte Edition are the same, which means the HD 5850 and the HD 6850 have equal limitations when it comes to graphical data transfer.

The Radeon HD 5850 Sapphire Vapor-X 1GB Edition has 1440 Shader Processing Units and the Radeon HD 6850 GigaByte Edition has 960. However, the actual shader performance of the HD 5850 is 529 and the actual shader performance of the HD 6850 is 394. The HD 5850 having 135 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the HD 5850 delivers a marginally smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the HD 6850.

We would recommend a PSU with at least 600 Watts for the HD 5850 and a PSU with at least 500 Watts for the HD 6850. The HD 5850 has been recommended a PSU with 100 Watts more than the HD 6850. The difference is significant enough that the HD 5850 may have an adverse affect on your yearly electricity bills in comparison to the HD 6850.

Mini ReviewRadeon HD 5850 Sapphire Vapor-X 1GB Edition is a special edition of the high-end Radeon HD 5850.
This edition comes overclocked out of the box in both central unit and operating memory clock which were raised to 735MHz and 1050MHz, respectively.
Unfortunately, benchmarks indicate there is little to no performance boost when compared to the reference card.
Radeon HD 6850 GigaByte Edition is a special edition of the powerful Radeon HD 6850.
It appears the only differences are the extra 45 MHZ on the core clock and 200 MHZ on the memory clock.
The performance is therefore better than the standard Radeon HD 6850 but still far from the next class GPU - Radeon HD 6870.
Very demanding games should run on high settings while less demanding games should be maxed out easily.
