In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia Quadro K420 are significantly better than the Nvidia GeForce 8600 GT 512MB GDDR3.

The Quadro K420 has a 336 MHz higher core clock speed and 16 more Texture Mapping Units than the 8600 GT. This results in the Quadro K420 providing 19.4 GTexel/s better texturing performance. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The Quadro K420 has a 336 MHz higher core clock speed and 8 more Render Output Units than the 8600 GT. This results in the Quadro K420 providing 9.7 GPixel/s better pixeling performance. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The Quadro K420 was released over three years more recently than the 8600 GT, and so the Quadro K420 is likely to have far better driver support, meaning it will be much more optimized and ultimately superior to the 8600 GT when running the latest games.

The Quadro K420 has 512 MB more video memory than the 8600 GT, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. This is supported by the fact that the Quadro K420 also has superior memory performance overall.

The Quadro K420 has 6.4 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the 8600 GT, which means that the memory performance of the Quadro K420 is marginally better than the 8600 GT.

The Quadro K420 has 192 Shader Processing Units and the GeForce 8600 GT 512MB GDDR3 has 32. However, the actual shader performance of the Quadro K420 is 168 and the actual shader performance of the 8600 GT is 43. The Quadro K420 having 125 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the Quadro K420 delivers a slightly smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the 8600 GT.

The Quadro K420 transistor size technology is 52 nm (nanometers) smaller than the 8600 GT. This means that the Quadro K420 is expected to run massively cooler and achieve higher clock frequencies than the 8600 GT.

The Quadro K420 requires 41 Watts to run and the GeForce 8600 GT 512MB GDDR3 requires 46 Watts. We would recommend a PSU with at least 350 Watts for the Quadro K420 and a PSU with at least 350 Watts for the 8600 GT. The 8600 GT requires 5 Watts more than the Quadro K420 to run. The difference is not significant enough for the 8600 GT to have a noticeably larger impact on your yearly electricity bills than the Quadro K420.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewQuadro K420 is an entry-level professional card based on the 28nm, Kepler architecture.

It's based on the Kepler GK107 GPU and offers 192 Shader Processing Units, 32 TMUs and 16 ROPs, on a 128-bit memory interface of standard DDR3. The central unit runs at 876MHz and the memory clock operates at up to 900MHz. It has a L2 Cache of 256KB and a rated board TDP of 41 Watts.

Despite exhibiting similarities to GeForce GT 720, due to being under-clocked and because Quadro K420's drivers are only certified for professional applications only, its gaming performance is only slightly above GeForce GT 720.
GeForce 8600 GT 512MB GDDR3 is one of the many variants of the fast-middle-class GeForce 8600 GT.
On this version, the GPU is equipped with 512MB of standard GDDR3. The architecture allows the use of 512MB, since the GPU's processing power is strong enough and the memory controller is up for the task of processing 512MB. Therefore, the performance is superior to the 256MB version and any other version of DDR2, including 1GB.
However, and due to its architecture limitations, modern demanding games will require reduced settings, even if they don't require more than 512MB of video ram. Very Demanding games like Metro 2033 are only playable at the lowest settings.
