In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia GeForce 8600 GS are significantly better than the Intel HD Graphics Desktop (Sandy Bridge).

This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

Mini ReviewIntel HD Graphics Desktop (Sandy Bridge) are integrated graphics in the budget Celeron and Pentium Sandy Bridge Desktop processors.
Their performance depends on the processor they are integrated on, as the latter defines the Base and Boost Clock, as well as on the SYSTEM RAM, which defines the operating memory clock, and whether the GPU accesses a 64-bit or 128-bit memory interface.

GeForce 8600 GS is a middle-class GFX based on the 80nm variant of the first-shader unified architecture.
It's based on the G84 Core and offers 16 Shader Processing Units, 8 TMUs and 8 ROPs, on a 128-bit memory interface of DDR2. The central unit runs at 540MHz and the memory clock operates at 400MHz. It will consume no more than 47 Watt.
It's therefore more comparable to GeForce 8500 GT and pales in comparison with GeForce 8600 GT.
This GPU is only suited for a 1024x768 (or less) resolution. Most of today's games will only run at low settings and extremely demanding games might not run at all. DirectX 11 based games aren't supported and its performance will decrease drastically, as the resolution increases.
