In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the AMD Radeon HD 6850 GigaByte Edition are significantly better than the AMD Radeon HD 6770 Sapphire 1GB Edition.

The HD 6770 has a 30 MHz higher core clock speed than the HD 6850, but the HD 6850 has 8 more Texture Mapping Units than the HD 6770. As a result, the HD 6850 exhibits a 5.4 GTexel/s better Texture Fill Rate than the HD 6770. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The HD 6770 has a 30 MHz higher core clock speed than the HD 6850, but the HD 6850 has 16 more Render Output Units than the HD 6770. As a result, the HD 6850 exhibits a 12.6 GPixel/s better Pixel Fill Rate than the HD 6770. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The HD 6770 was released less than a year after the HD 6850, and so they are likely to have similar driver support for optimizing performance when running the latest games.

The Radeon HD 6770 Sapphire 1GB Edition and the Radeon HD 6850 GigaByte Edition have the same amount of video memory, but are likely to provide slightly different experiences when displaying game textures at high resolutions.

The HD 6850 has 57.6 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the HD 6770, which means that the memory performance of the HD 6850 is much better than the HD 6770.

The Radeon HD 6770 Sapphire 1GB Edition has 800 Shader Processing Units and the Radeon HD 6850 GigaByte Edition has 960. However, the actual shader performance of the HD 6770 is 340 and the actual shader performance of the HD 6850 is 394. The HD 6850 having 54 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the HD 6850 delivers a significantly smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the HD 6770.

The Radeon HD 6770 Sapphire 1GB Edition requires 108 Watts to run but there is no entry for the Radeon HD 6850 GigaByte Edition. We would recommend a PSU with at least 500 Watts for the HD 6770 and a PSU with at least 500 Watts for the HD 6850. The two GPUs have been recommended a PSU with the same amount of wattage. As such, there is no need to worry about which will more significantly affect your yearly electricity bills.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewOverview
Radeon HD 6770 Sapphire 1GB Edition is a special edition of AMD's fast-middle-class Radeon HD 6770. It is a reference card as it features a new Cooling Solution but no overclocking out of the box. Read below to know more.

Overclock Out of The Box
The Central Unit remains clocked at 850MHz and the Memory Clock still operates at 1200MHz.

Cooling Solution
The reference AMD Single-Fan Cooling System has been replaced by Sapphire's Large Single Fan Cooling Solution. This means the card runs cooler under load.

Power Consumption
The Rated Board TDP should remain the same: 108W. We recommend a 500W PSU with one available 6-pin connector.

Release Price
Not available.

Performance
Radeon HD 6770 Sapphire 1GB Edition offers exactly the same performance the reference card does.
Radeon HD 6850 GigaByte Edition is a special edition of the powerful Radeon HD 6850.
It appears the only differences are the extra 45 MHZ on the core clock and 200 MHZ on the memory clock.
The performance is therefore better than the standard Radeon HD 6850 but still far from the next class GPU - Radeon HD 6870.
Very demanding games should run on high settings while less demanding games should be maxed out easily.
