In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the AMD Radeon HD 6970M are significantly better than the Nvidia GeForce GT 445M v2.
The Radeon HD 6970M has a 110 MHz higher core clock speed and 24 more Texture Mapping Units than the GT 445M. This results in the Radeon HD 6970M providing 18.9 GTexel/s better texturing performance. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.
The Radeon HD 6970M has a 110 MHz higher core clock speed and 16 more Render Output Units than the GT 445M. This results in the Radeon HD 6970M providing 12.7 GPixel/s better pixeling performance. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.
The Radeon HD 6970M was released less than a year after the GT 445M, and so they are likely to have similar driver support for optimizing performance when running the latest games.
The Radeon HD 6970M has 1024 MB more video memory than the GT 445M, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. This is supported by the fact that the Radeon HD 6970M also has superior memory performance overall.
The Radeon HD 6970M has 75.2 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the GT 445M, which means that the memory performance of the Radeon HD 6970M is much better than the GT 445M.
The GeForce GT 445M v2 has 144 Shader Processing Units and the Radeon HD 6970M has 960. However, the actual shader performance of the GT 445M is 164 and the actual shader performance of the Radeon HD 6970M is 326. The Radeon HD 6970M having 162 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the Radeon HD 6970M delivers a massively smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the GT 445M.
The GeForce GT 445M v2 requires 35 Watts to run and the Radeon HD 6970M requires 75 Watts. The Radeon HD 6970M requires 40 Watts more than the GT 445M to run. The difference is significant enough that the Radeon HD 6970M may have a slight adverse affect on your yearly electricity bills in comparison to the GT 445M.

Mini Review | Overview GeForce GT 445M v2 is a Fast-Middle-Class Mobile Graphics Card based on the first revision of the Fermi Architecture. Architecture The Fermi Architecture is manufactured with a 40nm technology and uses a technique known as Hot Clocking: The Shaders are clocked twice as fast as the Central Unit. While this leads to a reasonable performance boost, it causes enormous amounts of energy dissipation, leading, ultimately, to a significantly higher operating temperature. Fermi is also the first GPU architecture with fully cached memory access which increases memory performance. GPU It equips a GPU Codenamed GF106-N11E-GE-A1 which has 3 Stream Multiprocessors activated and thus offers 144 Shader Processing Units, 24 TMUs and 16 ROPs. The Central Unit is clocked at 570MHz. Memory The GPU accesses a 1GB frame buffer of fast GDDR5, through a 128-bit memory interface. The size of the frame buffer is adequate. The Memory Clock Operates at 625MHz. Features DirectX 11.0 Support (11.0 Hardware Default) and support for Optimus, 3D Vision Surround, PhysX, Realtime Raytracing and other technologies Power Consumption With a rated board TDP of 35W, it is suited for 15" or larger laptops. Performance Gaming benchmarks put its performance almost on level with the desktop GeForce GT 450 v4. System Suggestions We recommend a decent processor (Intel Core i5 Mobile) and 4GB of RAM for a system with GeForce GT 445M v2. | Radeon HD 6970M is a high-end GPU based on the 40nm Terrascale 2 architecture. It's based on the Barts Core (therefore related to Radeon HD 6850) and offers 980 Shader Processing Units, 48 TMUs and 32 ROPs on a 256-bit memory interface of fast GDDR5. Its central clock runs at 680MHz and the memory clock operates at 900MHz. Despite being based on the same Core used on Radeon HD 6850, its performance is more comparable to Radeon HD 6790 due to being heavily underclocked. Most of today's modern games are playable at the highest settings but some exceptions will require lower resolutions or modest presets to be played optimally. |
