In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Intel GM45 Express Chipset are noticeably better than the AMD Radeon HD 7290.
The Radeon HD 7290 was released over three years more recently than the GM45 Express Chipset, and so the Radeon HD 7290 is likely to have far better driver support, meaning it will be much more optimized and ultimately superior to the GM45 Express Chipset when running the latest games.
Both GPUs exhibit very poor performance, so rather than upgrading from one to the other you should consider looking at more powerful GPUs. Neither of these will be able to run the latest games in any playable way.
The Radeon HD 7290 and the GM45 Express Chipset have the same amount of video memory, but are likely to provide slightly different experiences when displaying game textures at high resolutions.
The GM45 Express Chipset has 8.6 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the Radeon HD 7290, which means that the memory performance of the GM45 Express Chipset is marginally better than the Radeon HD 7290.
The Radeon HD 7290 has 80 Shader Processing Units and the GM45 Express Chipset has 10. However, the actual shader performance of the Radeon HD 7290 is 16 and the actual shader performance of the GM45 Express Chipset is 5. The Radeon HD 7290 having 11 better shader performance is not particularly notable, as altogether the GM45 Express Chipset performs better when taking into account other relevant data.
The Radeon HD 7290 requires 9 Watts to run and the GM45 Express Chipset requires 12 Watts. The GM45 Express Chipset requires 3 Watts more than the Radeon HD 7290 to run. The difference is not significant enough for the GM45 Express Chipset to have a noticeably larger impact on your yearly electricity bills than the Radeon HD 7290.

Mini Review | Overview Radeon HD 7290 is an Integrated Graphics Card, on the APU C-70, based on the second revision of the Terascale Architecture. Architecture The Second variant of the Terascale 2 Architecture is still manufactured with a 40nm technology and despite allowing more Stream Cores, their design remains more or less the same compared to the first variant. GPU It equips a GPU codenamed Loveland which has 1 Compute Units activated and thus offers 80 Shader Processing Units, 8 TMUs and 4 ROPs. The Central Unit Initially Runs at 280MHz and goes up to 400MHz, in Turbo Mode. Memory The GPU Shares the System's RAM which varies from laptop to laptop. Typically, the GPU reserves 1GB. Depending on whether or not the system's RAM is Dual-Channeled, it can access either a 64-bit or 128-bit memory interface. The operating memory clock also depends on the at which speed the System's RAM is running and is limited by the highest operating speed that the Processor supports. In this case, it is 533MHz. It is then obvious the Memory Bandwidth depends on a lot of factors and thus Radeon HD 7310's performance may vary from system to system. Features DirectX 11.0 Support (11.0 Hardware Default) and support for HD3D, Eyefinity, App Acceleration, PowerPlay and other technologies. Performance Radeon HD 7290 is a direct re-brand of Radeon HD 6290. Gaming benchmarks put its performance on level with the older Radeon HD 6290. System Suggestions We recommend 4GB of RAM for a system with Radeon HD 7290. | Intel GM45 Express Chipset comes embedded on the Core 2 Duo, Core 2 Extreme, Celeron M CPUS and features an Integrated GPU called GMA X4500HD. The performance depends on which type of system ram is installed and GM45 supports slow DDR2 or standard DDR3. We will use standard DDR3 for ranking purposes and the memory clock of 533MHz (max supported). Due to its characteristics (e.g. Shared Memory) the performance is very limited and only very old games or today's non-demanding games can be played with fluent Frame Rates. |
