In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the AMD Radeon HD 7340 are significantly better than the AMD Radeon HD 7290.
The Radeon HD 7340 has a 243 MHz higher core clock speed and the same number of Texture Mapping Units as the Radeon HD 7290. This results in the Radeon HD 7340 providing 2 GTexel/s better texturing performance. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.
The Radeon HD 7340 has a 243 MHz higher core clock speed than the Radeon HD 7290 and the same number of Render Output Units. This results in the Radeon HD 7340 providing 1 GPixel/s better pixeling performance. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.
The Radeon HD 7340 was released less than a year after the Radeon HD 7290, and so they are likely to have similar driver support for optimizing performance when running the latest games.
Both GPUs exhibit very poor performance, so rather than upgrading from one to the other you should consider looking at more powerful GPUs. Neither of these will be able to run the latest games in any playable way.
The Radeon HD 7290 and the Radeon HD 7340 have the same amount of video memory, but are likely to provide slightly different experiences when displaying game textures at high resolutions.
The Radeon HD 7340 has 2.2 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the Radeon HD 7290, which means that the memory performance of the Radeon HD 7340 is marginally better than the Radeon HD 7290.
Both the Radeon HD 7290 and the Radeon HD 7340 have 80 Shader Processing Units. Having the same number of SPUs and using the same architecture means that the performance they offer can be compared by looking at the memory bandwidth, Texture and Pixel Rates. In this case, the Radeon HD 7340 has 2 GTexel/s better Texture Fill Rate, 1 GPixel/s better Pixel Fill Rate, and 2.2 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth, so should have a marginally faster performance than the Radeon HD 7290.
The Radeon HD 7290 requires 9 Watts to run and the Radeon HD 7340 requires 18 Watts. The Radeon HD 7340 requires 9 Watts more than the Radeon HD 7290 to run. The difference is not significant enough for the Radeon HD 7340 to have a noticeably larger impact on your yearly electricity bills than the Radeon HD 7290.

Mini Review | Overview Radeon HD 7290 is an Integrated Graphics Card, on the APU C-70, based on the second revision of the Terascale Architecture. Architecture The Second variant of the Terascale 2 Architecture is still manufactured with a 40nm technology and despite allowing more Stream Cores, their design remains more or less the same compared to the first variant. GPU It equips a GPU codenamed Loveland which has 1 Compute Units activated and thus offers 80 Shader Processing Units, 8 TMUs and 4 ROPs. The Central Unit Initially Runs at 280MHz and goes up to 400MHz, in Turbo Mode. Memory The GPU Shares the System's RAM which varies from laptop to laptop. Typically, the GPU reserves 1GB. Depending on whether or not the system's RAM is Dual-Channeled, it can access either a 64-bit or 128-bit memory interface. The operating memory clock also depends on the at which speed the System's RAM is running and is limited by the highest operating speed that the Processor supports. In this case, it is 533MHz. It is then obvious the Memory Bandwidth depends on a lot of factors and thus Radeon HD 7310's performance may vary from system to system. Features DirectX 11.0 Support (11.0 Hardware Default) and support for HD3D, Eyefinity, App Acceleration, PowerPlay and other technologies. Performance Radeon HD 7290 is a direct re-brand of Radeon HD 6290. Gaming benchmarks put its performance on level with the older Radeon HD 6290. System Suggestions We recommend 4GB of RAM for a system with Radeon HD 7290. | Overview Radeon HD 7340 is an Integrated Graphics Card, on the APU E2-1800 Dual Core based, on the second revision of the Terascale Architecture.
