In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the AMD Radeon HD 7290 are significantly better than the Nvidia GeForce 8400M G.

The Radeon HD 7290 was released over three years more recently than the GeForce 8400M G, and so the Radeon HD 7290 is likely to have far better driver support, meaning it will be much more optimized and ultimately superior to the GeForce 8400M G when running the latest games.

Both GPUs exhibit very poor performance, so rather than upgrading from one to the other you should consider looking at more powerful GPUs. Neither of these will be able to run the latest games in any playable way.

The GeForce 8400M G has 256 MB video memory, but the Radeon HD 7290 does not have an entry, so the two GPUs cannot be reliably compared in this area.

The Radeon HD 7290 has 80 Shader Processing Units and the GeForce 8400M G has 8. However, the actual shader performance of the Radeon HD 7290 is 16 and the actual shader performance of the GeForce 8400M G is 3. The Radeon HD 7290 having 13 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the Radeon HD 7290 delivers a marginally smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the GeForce 8400M G.

The Radeon HD 7290 transistor size technology is 40 nm (nanometers) smaller than the GeForce 8400M G. This means that the Radeon HD 7290 is expected to run much cooler and achieve higher clock frequencies than the GeForce 8400M G. While they exhibit similar graphical performance, the Radeon HD 7290 should consume less power than the GeForce 8400M G.

The Radeon HD 7290 requires 9 Watts to run and the GeForce 8400M G requires 10 Watts. The GeForce 8400M G requires 1 Watts more than the Radeon HD 7290 to run. The difference is not significant enough for the GeForce 8400M G to have a noticeably larger impact on your yearly electricity bills than the Radeon HD 7290.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewOverview
Radeon HD 7290 is an Integrated Graphics Card, on the APU C-70, based on the second revision of the Terascale Architecture.

Architecture
The Second variant of the Terascale 2 Architecture is still manufactured with a 40nm technology and despite allowing more Stream Cores, their design remains more or less the same compared to the first variant.

GPU
It equips a GPU codenamed Loveland which has 1 Compute Units activated and thus offers 80 Shader Processing Units, 8 TMUs and 4 ROPs. The Central Unit Initially Runs at 280MHz and goes up to 400MHz, in Turbo Mode.

Memory
The GPU Shares the System's RAM which varies from laptop to laptop. Typically, the GPU reserves 1GB. Depending on whether or not the system's RAM is Dual-Channeled, it can access either a 64-bit or 128-bit memory interface. The operating memory clock also depends on the at which speed the System's RAM is running and is limited by the highest operating speed that the Processor supports. In this case, it is 533MHz.
It is then obvious the Memory Bandwidth depends on a lot of factors and thus Radeon HD 7310's performance may vary from system to system.

Features
DirectX 11.0 Support (11.0 Hardware Default) and support for HD3D, Eyefinity, App Acceleration, PowerPlay and other technologies.

Performance
Radeon HD 7290 is a direct re-brand of Radeon HD 6290.
Gaming benchmarks put its performance on level with the older Radeon HD 6290.

System Suggestions
We recommend 4GB of RAM for a system with Radeon HD 7290.
GeForce 8400M G is an entry-class level GPU part of the 8000M Series released by NVIDIA, in 2007.
Very demanding games(e.g. Metro 2033, The Witcher 2) and even demanding games (e.g. Crysis 2, Skyrim V)are most certainly unplayable. Moderate and less demanding games, like Call of Duty: Black Ops, might be playable smoothly at the lowest settings.
