In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the AMD Radeon HD 7290 are very slightly better than the Nvidia GeForce 9300M GS.
The Radeon HD 7290 was released over three years more recently than the GeForce 9300M GS, and so the Radeon HD 7290 is likely to have far better driver support, meaning it will be much more optimized and ultimately superior to the GeForce 9300M GS when running the latest games.
Both GPUs exhibit very poor performance, so rather than upgrading from one to the other you should consider looking at more powerful GPUs. Neither of these will be able to run the latest games in any playable way.
The GeForce 9300M GS has 256 MB video memory, but the Radeon HD 7290 does not have an entry, so the two GPUs cannot be reliably compared in this area.
The Radeon HD 7290 has 80 Shader Processing Units and the GeForce 9300M GS has 8. However, the actual shader performance of the Radeon HD 7290 is 16 and the actual shader performance of the GeForce 9300M GS is 4. The Radeon HD 7290 having 12 better shader performance is not particularly notable, as altogether the GeForce 9300M GS performs better when taking into account other relevant data.
The Radeon HD 7290 requires 9 Watts to run and the GeForce 9300M GS requires 13 Watts. The GeForce 9300M GS requires 4 Watts more than the Radeon HD 7290 to run. The difference is not significant enough for the GeForce 9300M GS to have a noticeably larger impact on your yearly electricity bills than the Radeon HD 7290.

Mini Review | Overview Radeon HD 7290 is an Integrated Graphics Card, on the APU C-70, based on the second revision of the Terascale Architecture. Architecture The Second variant of the Terascale 2 Architecture is still manufactured with a 40nm technology and despite allowing more Stream Cores, their design remains more or less the same compared to the first variant. GPU It equips a GPU codenamed Loveland which has 1 Compute Units activated and thus offers 80 Shader Processing Units, 8 TMUs and 4 ROPs. The Central Unit Initially Runs at 280MHz and goes up to 400MHz, in Turbo Mode. Memory The GPU Shares the System's RAM which varies from laptop to laptop. Typically, the GPU reserves 1GB. Depending on whether or not the system's RAM is Dual-Channeled, it can access either a 64-bit or 128-bit memory interface. The operating memory clock also depends on the at which speed the System's RAM is running and is limited by the highest operating speed that the Processor supports. In this case, it is 533MHz. It is then obvious the Memory Bandwidth depends on a lot of factors and thus Radeon HD 7310's performance may vary from system to system. Features DirectX 11.0 Support (11.0 Hardware Default) and support for HD3D, Eyefinity, App Acceleration, PowerPlay and other technologies. Performance Radeon HD 7290 is a direct re-brand of Radeon HD 6290. Gaming benchmarks put its performance on level with the older Radeon HD 6290. System Suggestions We recommend 4GB of RAM for a system with Radeon HD 7290. | Providing powerful visual computing features to thin-and-light notebook PCs, the NVIDIA GeForce 9300M GS GPUs take mainstream systems to a new level of performance. With best-in-class HD video and audio combined with the ability to run visually-intensive applications, this graphics solution is ideal for your everyday computing needs to enjoy Windows Vista and todays popular games. This product is also enabled for CUDA applications and is NVIDIA PhysX-ready. |
