In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the AMD Mobility Radeon HD 545v are significantly better than the AMD Radeon HD 7290.
The Radeon HD has a 440 MHz higher core clock speed and the same number of Texture Mapping Units as the Radeon HD 7290. This results in the Radeon HD providing 3.6 GTexel/s better texturing performance. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.
The Radeon HD has a 440 MHz higher core clock speed than the Radeon HD 7290 and the same number of Render Output Units. This results in the Radeon HD providing 1.8 GPixel/s better pixeling performance. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.
The Radeon HD 7290 was released over a year more recently than the Radeon HD, and so the Radeon HD 7290 is likely to have better driver support, meaning it will be more optimized for running the latest games when compared to the Radeon HD.
Both GPUs exhibit very poor performance, so rather than upgrading from one to the other you should consider looking at more powerful GPUs. Neither of these will be able to run the latest games in any playable way.
The Radeon HD has 1024 MB video memory, but the Radeon HD 7290 does not have an entry, so the two GPUs cannot be reliably compared in this area.
Both the Radeon HD 7290 and the Mobility Radeon HD 545v have 80 Shader Processing Units. While the two GPUs have the same number of SPUs, the actual performance delivered by the Radeon HD is 37 and by the Radeon HD 7290 is 37. Knowing that the shader performance of the Radeon HD is superior, it is not necessary to examine the GPUs' respective Texture and Pixel Fill Rates.
The Radeon HD 7290 transistor size technology is 15 nm (nanometers) smaller than the Radeon HD. This means that the Radeon HD 7290 is expected to run slightly cooler and achieve higher clock frequencies than the Radeon HD. While they exhibit similar graphical performance, the Radeon HD 7290 should consume less power than the Radeon HD.
The Radeon HD 7290 requires 9 Watts to run and the Mobility Radeon HD 545v requires 15 Watts. The Radeon HD requires 6 Watts more than the Radeon HD 7290 to run. The difference is not significant enough for the Radeon HD to have a noticeably larger impact on your yearly electricity bills than the Radeon HD 7290.

Mini Review | Overview Radeon HD 7290 is an Integrated Graphics Card, on the APU C-70, based on the second revision of the Terascale Architecture. Architecture The Second variant of the Terascale 2 Architecture is still manufactured with a 40nm technology and despite allowing more Stream Cores, their design remains more or less the same compared to the first variant. GPU It equips a GPU codenamed Loveland which has 1 Compute Units activated and thus offers 80 Shader Processing Units, 8 TMUs and 4 ROPs. The Central Unit Initially Runs at 280MHz and goes up to 400MHz, in Turbo Mode. Memory The GPU Shares the System's RAM which varies from laptop to laptop. Typically, the GPU reserves 1GB. Depending on whether or not the system's RAM is Dual-Channeled, it can access either a 64-bit or 128-bit memory interface. The operating memory clock also depends on the at which speed the System's RAM is running and is limited by the highest operating speed that the Processor supports. In this case, it is 533MHz. It is then obvious the Memory Bandwidth depends on a lot of factors and thus Radeon HD 7310's performance may vary from system to system. Features DirectX 11.0 Support (11.0 Hardware Default) and support for HD3D, Eyefinity, App Acceleration, PowerPlay and other technologies. Performance Radeon HD 7290 is a direct re-brand of Radeon HD 6290. Gaming benchmarks put its performance on level with the older Radeon HD 6290. System Suggestions We recommend 4GB of RAM for a system with Radeon HD 7290. | Mobility Radeon HD 545v is a middle-class GPU based on the 55nm, Terascale 1 architecture and therefore not related to other Mobility HD 5000 Series GPUs. It's based on the M92 Core and offers 80 Shader Processing Units, 8 TMUs and 4 ROPs, on 64-bit memory interface of standard GDDR3. The central unit runs at 720MHz and the memory clock operates at up to 800MHz. It consumes no more than 15 Watt. Benchmarks indicate modern demanding games of 2007-2010, such as Crysis, BF2 and Metro 2033 were only playable at low settings smoothly, using a 1024x768 resolution. Therefore, today's modern demanding games should be playable on the low preset, using a 1024x768 resolution and extremely demanding modern games such as Crysis 3 might be unplayable. It's therefore a Mobility Radeon HD 5145 with a slightly lower operating memory clock and should offer similar performance. As based on the Terascale 1 architecture, DirectX 11 games aren't supported. |
