In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia Geforce 405M are very slightly better than the AMD Radeon HD 7290.
The Geforce 405M has a 326 MHz higher core clock speed and the same number of Texture Mapping Units as the Radeon HD 7290. This results in the Geforce 405M providing 2.6 GTexel/s better texturing performance. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.
The Radeon HD 7290 was released less than a year after the Geforce 405M, and so they are likely to have similar driver support for optimizing performance when running the latest games.
Both GPUs exhibit very poor performance, so rather than upgrading from one to the other you should consider looking at more powerful GPUs. Neither of these will be able to run the latest games in any playable way.
The Geforce 405M has 512 MB video memory, but the Radeon HD 7290 does not have an entry, so the two GPUs cannot be reliably compared in this area.

However, the actual shader performance of the Radeon HD 7290 is 16 and the actual shader performance of the Geforce 405M is 22. The Geforce 405M having 6 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the Geforce 405M delivers a marginally smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the Radeon HD 7290.

Mini Review | Overview Radeon HD 7290 is an Integrated Graphics Card, on the APU C-70, based on the second revision of the Terascale Architecture. Architecture The Second variant of the Terascale 2 Architecture is still manufactured with a 40nm technology and despite allowing more Stream Cores, their design remains more or less the same compared to the first variant. GPU It equips a GPU codenamed Loveland which has 1 Compute Units activated and thus offers 80 Shader Processing Units, 8 TMUs and 4 ROPs. The Central Unit Initially Runs at 280MHz and goes up to 400MHz, in Turbo Mode. Memory The GPU Shares the System's RAM which varies from laptop to laptop. Typically, the GPU reserves 1GB. Depending on whether or not the system's RAM is Dual-Channeled, it can access either a 64-bit or 128-bit memory interface. The operating memory clock also depends on the at which speed the System's RAM is running and is limited by the highest operating speed that the Processor supports. In this case, it is 533MHz. It is then obvious the Memory Bandwidth depends on a lot of factors and thus Radeon HD 7310's performance may vary from system to system. Features DirectX 11.0 Support (11.0 Hardware Default) and support for HD3D, Eyefinity, App Acceleration, PowerPlay and other technologies. Performance Radeon HD 7290 is a direct re-brand of Radeon HD 6290. Gaming benchmarks put its performance on level with the older Radeon HD 6290. System Suggestions We recommend 4GB of RAM for a system with Radeon HD 7290. | GeForce 405M is the latest addition to the 400M Series released by NVIDIA in 2010-2012. It's a renamed GeForce 315M, based on the GT218 architecture. It only supports up to 512MB DDR3/GDDR3 memory type and DirectX 10.1. GeForce 405M is one of the weakest integrated GPUs with dedicated memory currently in the market, it has only 16 Pipelines and so, along with other factors, the performance is very limited. Therefore, the most demanding games are probably unplayable even at the lowest settings while demanding games should run fluently at low settings. Less demanding games will run fluently from medium to high settings, depending on the amount of video memory required, since GeForce 405M only has up to 512MB. |
