In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the AMD Radeon HD 7690M are significantly better than the Intel HD i7 3840QM.

The Radeon HD 7690M has a 75 MHz higher core clock speed and 20 more Texture Mapping Units than the HD i7 3840QM. This results in the Radeon HD 7690M providing 14.8 GTexel/s better texturing performance. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The Radeon HD 7690M has a 75 MHz higher core clock speed and 14 more Render Output Units than the HD i7 3840QM. This results in the Radeon HD 7690M providing 10.3 GPixel/s better pixeling performance. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The HD i7 3840QM was released less than a year after the Radeon HD 7690M, and so they are likely to have similar driver support for optimizing performance when running the latest games.

The Radeon HD 7690M has 1024 MB video memory, but the HD i7 3840QM does not have an entry, so the two GPUs cannot be reliably compared in this area.

The HD i7 3840QM has 16 Shader Processing Units and the Radeon HD 7690M has 480. However, the actual shader performance of the HD i7 3840QM is 83 and the actual shader performance of the Radeon HD 7690M is 174. The Radeon HD 7690M having 91 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the Radeon HD 7690M delivers a noticeably smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the HD i7 3840QM.

The HD i7 3840QM transistor size technology is 18 nm (nanometers) smaller than the Radeon HD 7690M. This means that the HD i7 3840QM is expected to run slightly cooler and achieve higher clock frequencies than the Radeon HD 7690M.

The HD i7 3840QM requires 45 Watts to run and the Radeon HD 7690M requires 20 Watts. The HD i7 3840QM requires 25 Watts more than the Radeon HD 7690M to run. The difference is not significant enough for the HD i7 3840QM to have a noticeably larger impact on your yearly electricity bills than the Radeon HD 7690M.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewN/AOverview
Radeon HD 7690M is a Middle-Class Mobile Graphics Card based on the second revision of the Terascale Architecture.

Architecture
The Second variant of the Terascale 2 Architecture is still manufactured with a 40nm technology and despite allowing more Stream Cores, their design remains more or less the same compared to the first variant.

GPU
It equips a GPU codenamed Thames XT which has 6 Compute Units activated and thus offers 480 Shader Processing Units, 24 TMUs and 8 ROPs. The Central Unit runs at 725MHz.

Memory
The GPU accesses a 1GB frame buffer of DDR3, through a 128-bit memory interface. The memory clock operates at 900MHz. The size of the frame buffer is adequate.

Features
DirectX 11.0 Support (11.0 Hardware Default) and support for Crossfire, HD3D, Eyefinity, App Acceleration, PowerPlay and other technologies.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 20W, it is suited for average sized laptops.

Performance
Gaming benchmarks put its performance somewhere between GeForce GT 550M and GeForce GT 555M.

System Suggestions
We recommend a modest processor (Intel Core i3 Mobile and 4GB of RAM for a system with Radeon HD 7690M.
