In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the AMD Radeon HD 7490M are marginally better than the Intel HD i7 3840QM.

The Radeon HD 7490M has a 150 MHz higher core clock speed and 4 more Texture Mapping Units than the HD i7 3840QM. This results in the Radeon HD 7490M providing 3.8 GTexel/s better texturing performance. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The Radeon HD 7490M has a 150 MHz higher core clock speed and 2 more Render Output Units than the HD i7 3840QM. This results in the Radeon HD 7490M providing 1.9 GPixel/s better pixeling performance. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The HD i7 3840QM was released less than a year after the Radeon HD 7490M, and so they are likely to have similar driver support for optimizing performance when running the latest games.

The Radeon HD 7490M has 1024 MB video memory, but the HD i7 3840QM does not have an entry, so the two GPUs cannot be reliably compared in this area.

The HD i7 3840QM has 16 Shader Processing Units and the Radeon HD 7490M has 160. However, the actual shader performance of the HD i7 3840QM is 83 and the actual shader performance of the Radeon HD 7490M is 64. The HD i7 3840QM having 19 better shader performance is not particularly notable, as altogether the Radeon HD 7490M performs better when taking into account other relevant data.

The HD i7 3840QM transistor size technology is 18 nm (nanometers) smaller than the Radeon HD 7490M. This means that the HD i7 3840QM is expected to run slightly cooler and achieve higher clock frequencies than the Radeon HD 7490M. While they exhibit similar graphical performance, the HD i7 3840QM should consume less power than the Radeon HD 7490M.

The HD i7 3840QM requires 45 Watts to run and the Radeon HD 7490M requires 9 Watts. The HD i7 3840QM requires 36 Watts more than the Radeon HD 7490M to run. The difference is significant enough that the HD i7 3840QM may have a slight adverse affect on your yearly electricity bills in comparison to the Radeon HD 7490M.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewN/AOverview
Radeon HD 7490M is an Entry-Level Mobile Graphics Card based on the second revision of the Terascale Architecture.

The Second variant of the Terascale 2 Architecture is still manufactured with a 40nm technology and despite allowing more Stream Cores, their design remains more or less the same compared to the first variant.

It equips a GPU codenamed Seymour XTX which has 2 Compute Units activated and thus offers 160 Shader Processing Units, 8 TMUs and 4 ROPs. The Central Unit runs at 800MHz.

The GPU accesses a 1GB frame buffer of fast GDDR5, through a 64-bit memory interface. The size of the frame buffer is adequate. The memory clock operates at 950MHz.

DirectX 11.0 Support (11.0 Hardware Default) and support for HD3D, Eyefinity, App Acceleration, PowerPlay and other technologies.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 9W, it is suited for smaller laptops.

Gaming benchmarks put its performance somewhat below a GeForce GT 420M.

System Suggestions
We recommend a Modest Processor (Intel Core i3 Mobile and 4GB of RAM for a system with Radeon HD 7490M.
