In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 Asus ROG Matrix Gold 4GB Edition are significantly better than the AMD Radeon HD 7970 GHz Toxic 6GB Edition.

The GTX 980 has a 217 MHz higher core clock speed and the same number of Texture Mapping Units as the HD 7970. This results in the GTX 980 providing 27.8 GTexel/s better texturing performance. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The GTX 980 has a 217 MHz higher core clock speed and 32 more Render Output Units than the HD 7970. This results in the GTX 980 providing 49.1 GPixel/s better pixeling performance. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The GTX 980 was released over a year more recently than the HD 7970, and so the GTX 980 is likely to have better driver support, meaning it will be more optimized for running the latest games when compared to the HD 7970.

Both GPUs exhibit very powerful performance, so it probably isn't worth upgrading from one to the other, as both are capable of running even the most demanding games at the highest settings.

The HD 7970 has 2048 MB more video memory than the GTX 980, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. However, the overall memory performance is about the same.

The HD 7970 has 63.6 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the GTX 980, which means that the memory performance of the HD 7970 is much better than the GTX 980.

Both the GeForce GTX 980 Asus ROG Matrix Gold 4GB Edition and the Radeon HD 7970 GHz Toxic 6GB Edition have 2048 Shader Processing Units. While the two GPUs have the same number of SPUs, the actual performance delivered by the GTX 980 is 3959 and by the HD 7970 is 2002. Knowing that the shader performance of the GTX 980 is superior, it is not necessary to examine the GPUs' respective Texture and Pixel Fill Rates.

The GeForce GTX 980 Asus ROG Matrix Gold 4GB Edition requires 375 Watts to run and the Radeon HD 7970 GHz Toxic 6GB Edition requires 265 Watts. We would recommend a PSU with at least 600 Watts for the GTX 980. The GTX 980 requires 110 Watts more than the HD 7970 to run. The difference is significant enough that the GTX 980 may have an adverse affect on your yearly electricity bills in comparison to the HD 7970.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewOverview
GeForce GTX 980 Asus ROG Matrix Gold 4GB Edition is a special edition of NVIDIA's High-End GeForce GTX 980 4GB, created by Asus.

Overclock: Central Unit
The Central Unit now runs at 1317MHz, instead of 1127MHz and goes up to 1431MHz, in Turbo Mode.

Overclock: Memory Clock
The Operating Memory Clock and the Frame Buffer remain the same.

Cooling Solution
The reference NVIDIA Single-Fan Cooling System has been replaced by Asus's DirectCU II Dual Fan Cooling Solution. This means the card runs cooler under load.

Performance
Benchmarks indicate a 14% performance over the reference GeForce GTX 980 4GB.
Radeon HD 7970 GHz Toxic 6GB Edition is a special edition of Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition.
It comes with 2 modes: a default core-clock of 1050MHz that goes up to 1100MHz in Turbo or a default core-clock of 1100MHz that goes up to 1200MHz. It also features a new cooling system with 2 huge fans. The memory clock will also be raised to 1600MHz, if using the highest option (lethal Turbo mode).
Using the lethal turbo mode, the performance boost is around 6% than reference Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition.
