In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 4GB SLI are massively better than the Intel Iris i5 4258U.

The GTX 980 has a 926 MHz higher core clock speed and 248 more Texture Mapping Units than the Iris i5 4258U. This results in the GTX 980 providing 286.7 GTexel/s better texturing performance. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The GTX 980 has a 926 MHz higher core clock speed and 124 more Render Output Units than the Iris i5 4258U. This results in the GTX 980 providing 143.3 GPixel/s better pixeling performance. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The GTX 980 was released over a year more recently than the Iris i5 4258U, and so the GTX 980 is likely to have better driver support, meaning it will be more optimized for running the latest games when compared to the Iris i5 4258U.

The GTX 980 has 8192 MB video memory, but the Iris i5 4258U does not have an entry, so the two GPUs cannot be reliably compared in this area.

The Iris i5 4258U has 40 Shader Processing Units and the GeForce GTX 980 4GB SLI has 4096. However, the actual shader performance of the Iris i5 4258U is 176 and the actual shader performance of the GTX 980 is 6724. The GTX 980 having 6548 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the GTX 980 delivers a massively smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the Iris i5 4258U.

The Iris i5 4258U transistor size technology is 6 nm (nanometers) smaller than the GTX 980. This means that the Iris i5 4258U is expected to run very slightly cooler and achieve higher clock frequencies than the GTX 980.

The Iris i5 4258U requires 15 Watts to run and the GeForce GTX 980 4GB SLI requires 350 Watts. We would recommend a PSU with at least 750 Watts for the GTX 980, but we do not have a recommended PSU wattage for the Iris i5 4258U. The GTX 980 requires 335 Watts more than the Iris i5 4258U to run. The difference is significant enough that the GTX 980 may have an adverse affect on your yearly electricity bills in comparison to the Iris i5 4258U.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewOverview
Intel Iris i5 4258U is the Specific Version of Intel Iris Graphics 5100 Mobile that is integrated in the Core i5-4258U Processor.

Architecture
The Haswell GT3 Core includes support for DirectX 11.1, OpenCL 1.2 and OpenGL 4.0. Additionally, it also offers better Decoding Performance, when compared to its Predecessors.

GPU
It equips a GPU Codenamed GT3 which offers 40 Shader Processing Units, 8 TMUs and 4 ROPs. The Central Unit Initially Runs at 200MHz and goes up to 1100MHz, in Turbo Mode.

Memory
The GPU Shares the System's RAM which varies from laptop to laptop. Typically, the GPU reserves 1GB. Depending on whether or not the system's RAM is Dual-Channeled, it can access either a 64-bit or 128-bit memory interface. The operating memory clock also depends on the at which speed the System's RAM is running and is limited by the highest operating speed that the Processor supports. In this case, it is 800MHz.
It is then obvious the Memory Bandwidth depends on a lot of factors and thus this Graphics Card performance may vary heavily from system to system.

Performance
Gaming benchmarks put its performance slightly above a dedicated GeForce GT 540M.

System Suggestions
We recommend 4GB of RAM for a System with Iris i5 4258U.
Overview
GeForce GTX 980 4GB SLI is a solution of two GeForce GTX 980 4GB put together using NVIDIA's SLI technology.

Architecture
The Second variant of the Maxwell Architecture, despite being also manufactured with a 28nm technology, has an extremely large L2 Cache and features a Third Generation Delta Color Compression which allows NVIDIA to produce Graphics Cards with relatively small memory data transfer rates, without causing too much impact on the overall performance. Furthermore, the Shaders have been redesigned and are both more powerful and energy efficient.

GPU
It consists of 2 GPUs codenamed GM204-400-A1 which, together, offer 4096 Shader Processing Units, 256 TMUs and 128 ROPs, on a 512-bit memory interface of fast GDDR5. The central unit runs at 1126MHz and goes up to 1216MHz, in Turbo Mode, while the memory clock operates at 1753MHz.

Power Consumption
Power Consumption lies between 300W and 400W.

Performance
Gaming benchmarks prove that at 4K (3840x2160) GeForce GTX 980 4GB SLI is over 7% faster than AMD's Radeon R9 295X2.

System Suggestions
We recommend a very strong processor (Intel Core i7 Six Core/AMD FX Eight Core) and 16GB of RAM for a system with GeForce GTX 980 4GB SLI.
