In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Intel HD i7 3840QM are marginally better than the Intel HD M-5Y10a.

The HD i7 3840QM has a 550 MHz higher core clock speed and the same number of Texture Mapping Units as the HD M-5Y10a. This results in the HD i7 3840QM providing 2.2 GTexel/s better texturing performance. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The HD i7 3840QM has a 550 MHz higher core clock speed and 1 more Render Output Units than the HD M-5Y10a. This results in the HD i7 3840QM providing 1.2 GPixel/s better pixeling performance. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The HD M-5Y10a was released over a year more recently than the HD i7 3840QM, and so the HD M-5Y10a is likely to have better driver support, meaning it will be more optimized for running the latest games when compared to the HD i7 3840QM.

The HD M-5Y10a and the HD i7 3840QM have the same amount of video memory, but are likely to provide slightly different experiences when displaying game textures at high resolutions.

The HD M-5Y10a has 12.8 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the HD i7 3840QM, which means that the memory performance of the HD M-5Y10a is slightly better than the HD i7 3840QM.

The HD M-5Y10a has 24 Shader Processing Units and the HD i7 3840QM has 16. However, the actual shader performance of the HD M-5Y10a is 154 and the actual shader performance of the HD i7 3840QM is 83. The HD M-5Y10a having 71 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the HD M-5Y10a delivers a marginally smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the HD i7 3840QM.

The HD M-5Y10a transistor size technology is 8 nm (nanometers) smaller than the HD i7 3840QM. This means that the HD M-5Y10a is expected to run very slightly cooler and achieve higher clock frequencies than the HD i7 3840QM. While they exhibit similar graphical performance, the HD M-5Y10a should consume less power than the HD i7 3840QM.

The HD M-5Y10a requires 5 Watts to run and the HD i7 3840QM requires 45 Watts. The HD i7 3840QM requires 40 Watts more than the HD M-5Y10a to run. The difference is significant enough that the HD i7 3840QM may have a slight adverse affect on your yearly electricity bills in comparison to the HD M-5Y10a.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewOverview
Intel HD M-5Y10a is the specific version of Intel HD Graphics 5300 Mobile that is integrated in the Core M-5Y10a Processor.

The Broadwell Core includes support for DirectX 11.2, OpenCL 2.0 and OpenGL 4.3. Additionally, it also offers better Decoding Performance, when compared to its Predecessors.
The GPU Codenamed GT2 offers 24 Shader Processing Units, 4 TMUs and 1 ROP.

The Central Unit Initially Runs at 100MHz and goes up to 800MHz, in Turbo Mode.

The Operating Memory Clock depends at which speed the System's RAM is running and which Memory Type is installed and is ultimately limited by the highest operating speed that the Processor supports. In this case, it is 800MHz.
Depending on whether or not the System's RAM is Dual-Channeled, it can access either a 64-bit or 128-bit Memory Interface.

Memory: Frame Buffer
The GPU Shares the System's RAM which varies according to the System. The GPU may reserve up to 2GB.

Because Performance depends heavily on the Memory Bandwidth, it may vary heavily from System to System.
Best Case Scenario, expect Performance Identical to a dedicated GeForce GT 420M.

System Suggestions
Intel HD M-5Y10a is best suited for resolutions up to and including 1366x768. We recommend 4GB of RAM for Optimal Performance.
